VHS : Six Weeks
I first watched this movie when I was about 18. I was pretty self absorbed at that time as most 18 year olds and emotionally numb. This movie still made me cry like I was a little girl. Anybody who doesn't cry at this movie probably didn't cry at "Old Yeller" either. I have been searching for this movie since I was eighteen which was 20 years ago, and I paid $40.00 for a VHS tape of it. It stuck in my mind for that long. Yes, it is that good. I will be sorry when I wear it out. Mary Tyler Moore is classy, and all that a lady should be in this movie. I hope anybody that watches it enjoys it as much as most of the rest of us obviously have.

VHS : Bombshell
At a time when Hollywood actresses are flying about the third world in search of adorable photogenic orphans, this pre-Code screwball comedy is more relevant than ever. Jean Harlow shows surprising comic depth as a peroxide blonde actress suddenly struck with the desire to adopt a baby. And what a supporting cast: Louise Beavers, Frank Morgan (the Wizard of Oz in, you know), Una Merkel (W.C Fields' daughter in the Bank Dick), Ted Healy (of Ted Healy and his [3]Stooges), C. Aubrey Smith, Pat O'Brien, and Dorothy DeBorba (from the Our Gang series). Needs to be released on DVD immediately.

Okay, Sonia Henie may not be the best actress ever, but I think she does a plenty adequate job here. After all, she's playing a midwest school teacher who is caught unawares that she has been entered into a nation-wide talent search for "The Girl of the North". Given this is the role she's playing, the role of a school teacher who is suddenly thrust into the limelight, what kind of acting experience do you need? I felt her portrayal was realistic! I mean, one day you're a school teacher, the next day, your acting in movies? Of course you are going to be awkward, not to mention scared out of your wits.

Ty was just outstanding. He was funny, charming, and a bit of Cyrnao De Bergerac thrown in (when he's writing love songs for the other guy to sing to the girl who he loves).

VHS : Magdalene Sisters
This movie is a realistic look at the abuse of girls and women by Roman Catholic priest and nuns in "homes for wayward girls" in Ireland. These "homes" were basically white slavery, revenue producers and baby mills for the Roman Catholic church (RCC). No one after seeing this movie could deny that the abuse in the RCC is localized to a few bad apples in the RCC. With over 50,000 girls going through this horrible experience it is no wonder that people are leaving RCC is losing members.
The movie is well made "docudrama" with good production quality. Although it is shocking to see, it is nonetheless very truthful. If you do not have a strong stomach, this is not the movie for you.
While the characters are composites of the thousands of girls that passed through theses homes. The interviews on the "extra section" ... Read More

VHS : Orlando
In her most playful and exuberant novel, Virginia Woolf writes the "historical biography" of Orlando, a young boy of nobility during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. A wild ride through four centuries, the novel shows Orlando aging, magically, only thirty-six years between 1588 and 1928. Even more magically, he also changes from a man to a woman. As she explores Orlando's life, Woolf also explores the differing roles of men and women in society during various periods, ultimately concluding that one's role as a man or woman is determined by society, rather than by birth.

From the Elizabethan period, during which Orlando works as a steward for the queen and also serves as her lover, he progresses to the reign of James I, experiencing a profound love for a Russian princess, Sasha, who is herself exploring the role of a man. ... Read More
