VHS : Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves
I love this movie. I owned it on VHS and was looking to upgrade, so I bought this DVD. It's a 2 sided disc so you have to turn the disc over half way through the movie just to watch the rest. Lame. I was also a bit disappointed that the video by Bryan Adams wasn't at the end with the credits like it was on the VHS. It was also at the end of the movie in the movie theatre too, so I'm not sure why they would exclude it on the DVD. I love this movie and hate to give it any thing less than a 4, but because of the DVD format, I'm giving it a 2.

This film opens with a submarine beneath the sea. It detects an unknown object speeding towards them. What could it be? The submarine strikes some rocks and sinks rapidly. Only a buoy marks the spot. There will be an investigation, and a civilian oil rig crew will try to rescue the USS Montana before the hurricane arrives in a few hours. The conversation introduces the people and shows their interactions. The deep diving ships locate the submarine and inspect it. Some enter the submarine to explore it. There are no survivors. One diver has a problem. A strange event occurs. The storm arrives, and mechanical troubles occur to create perils.

There is one disaster after another, and narrow escapes from floods. Will they survive in the cold when the oxygen runs low? Will a strange ... Read More

VHS : The Color Of Money
Just as a note--my review comes shortly after the death of Paul Newman, and in a sense this is my way to pay tribute to one of the greatest actors of all time. He will be sorely missed.

Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) was once a great pool shark, but that was 25 years ago. Now he's selling liquor, ironically in pool halls, until he stumbles onto Vince (Tom Cruise), an arrogant, young pool hustler. Felson tries to be his mentor, show him the ropes and teach him a thing or two about what it means to be the best. The desire to play was too much for Felson so he pulls a quick one on Vince, and in a turn of events, competes against him in the nine ball championships.

"The Color of Money" is a truly enticing picture. It has a lot going for it...great direction from Scorsese, ... Read More

I think the movie is only truly enjoyable as a demented version of I Love Lucy... but that's me.

VHS : The Perfect Storm
I felt like this movie did a lot of typical things movies of this sort do: bad things are going to happen to these plucky guys, so let's give you some back story so you sympathize with them. Some of the back story in this movie was pretty cheesy. The movie picks up once the storm rolls in, but the weather guy at the TV station in Boston commenting on the meteorology to bring you along was pretty cheesy, too. Everyone has a pretty good idea how this ends up, but I'll try not to spoil it. There is a pretty good side story with a Coast Guard ship and an Air Force Reserve helicopter. The movie condenses down a couple of stories from the book, and takes some other liberties that have made other viewers skeptical about this plot. Yes, the Air Force helicopter really went out on a rescue in the storm, and it did ... Read More

Not a bad first half, up through the murder. But when Kevin Kline's character was released on bond, that's pretty much when it fell through the roof. I've never heard of somebody making bail when they are facing life in prison or the death sentence. And then being able to go anywhere you want? Even on bail, you can't leave the city. But yet he was able to sneak around, travel to Savannah, spy on his rival, all without any hindrance from the police. I pretty much figured out why the neighbor replaced his wife with a "stand-in". He needed somebody to drive the cigarette boat to prove he was out on the lake; but what I don't understand is why he allowed her to leave unharmed when all was said and done. Not only that, you would think both the police and the insurance company would have done a better job at the investigation, ... Read More

VHS : White Sands
An early 1990s effort directed by NZ director Roger Donaldson (Species etc....) with great cast of William Dafoe in an early lead role as a local sherif who lets his enthusiasm to solve a murder lead to impersonating a dead FBI agent; Mickey Rourke as gum chewing and nattily dressed villain (not too different from his few "good guy" roles now I think of it!); an affluent femme fatale with a difference in Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Sam Jackson as a wild card FBI operative, plus a well scripted multiple double crossing story that keeps you guessing till the end, all beautifully filmed in New Mexico, a part of the USA I still think is amazing for its natural scenery.

I completely missed this on release but purchased the DVD in a clearance sale and would strongly recommend as a take it easy, night in watch. While not ... Read More

This is one of Patrick's best light hearted movies.
You have a family in need of a husband & father.
Patrick fills the role, until the father comes home from
tha war. The father went off to be a soldier, it was during
WWII. The father finally comes home from the war, and the oldest
son finds out once he become a father that JACK(Patrick) was a
soldier that had died in the war back when he was a kid.
I rate this movie a 9 from 1to10!!
