I liked this movie quite a bit. I always wondered if they would make a sequel in the future nope not as of yet the story was cool the characters were well the aliens were so 80's but it was fun to watch and not boring. It was the same with Flight Of The Navigator sad it would've been interesting to say the least for a cool sequel!.But I think it is the return of the 80's an example would be the movies for 2008,2010!

The opening scenes of this "dark comedy" feature great 1950s cars, decor, costumes, and musical score! Perky housewife "Mom" is a kitchen whiz who serves up tasty looking left-overs every night. White shirt-and-tie "Dad" is ravenous after putting in long days at Toxico. (Clever company name!) Little Michael just wants to make friends at his new school - and eat something for dinner that's not "mystery meat." What a wholesome, 50s era set-up for a comedy about cannibals! I was having a fun time and even asking for "seconds" at the dinner table - until the little boy started having nightmares. Then I lost my appetite completely.

This is NOT a comedy and definitely not for the kiddies. The first fifteen minutes or so are fine, but watch out! When the film-makers start splashing blood ... Read More

The previous reviews of this film are great, so I won't praddle on - just want to add a couple notes. Though I'm a Schrader fan and film buff, I was never aware that this "Trilogy" existed and enjoyed this film on its own. This film is not Taxi Driver, one of the greatest American films ever made, but it also does not carry the over-bearing weight of that film, and can be "enjoyed", with an anti-hero which we can more readily identify. The style is minimalist with great visual touches and choices by Schrader (with some moments that are quiet but extremely revealing), fun dialogue and interesting characters. The subtext dealing with aging drug dealer DeFoe's insomniac character LaTour, confronting his "lost dreams" as the "garbage" of his past piles up (set against a New York waste haulers' strike) is compelling ... I saw this film when it came out in 1978. The scene I admired the most is towards the beginning when Eve brings a valuable vase to her daughter's house and then fumbles with it. I was terrified that she would drop it and it would shatter taking out everyone and everything around her.

Rich white people are confusing with all of their beiges and pale colors and critical self-editing.

It must be so difficult to be creative when you have been trained to be suspicious of everything you don't already admire.

Maybe it's just my age (baby boomer), but this edgy romantic comedy from 1979 has such wit and charm, it has always had a very special place in my heart. John Heard plays a somewhat lost, slightly wounded romantic, and Mary Beth Hurt is the perfect companion he meets while she's separated from the husband she never should have married. They are brought to life from Ann Beattie's novel with such commitment, it's a joy. The secondary characters, every single one, are all such a treat as well. The late Ken McMillan and Gloria Grahame, Peter Riegert when he was just starting out, they're all wonderful. Find a copy of this movie and enjoy!

I did my senior research paper on the original Edith Wharton novel, and the film is so faithful to her original language and vision that I was nearly knocked backward by the brilliance of this ravishingly intoxicating film. All of the symbolism of the novel is here, including the colors and flowers associated with May and Ellen respectively. Whenever I read the novel, I always see Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day Lewis as the ill-fated lovers in my mind, and I very much wish that Michelle Pfeiffer had been been honored with the Oscar for Best Actress for what is very much her finest performance to date. Besides Pfeiffer and Lewis, the rest of the cast is spell-bindingly brilliant, without a weak link in sight. All in all, this is the most faithful adaptation of a novel ever put on film, and the most visually breathtaking with what is one of ... Read More

I recently purchased this DVD and after watching it I felt like I had just watched a television edit of this movie. I got online and did some searching for the specs of the VHS version and it turns out that this DVD version has some 14 minutes of footage removed. The original movie is 106 minutes and this DVD is 92 minutes (NOT 106 minutes like it says on this website). It even has printed on the DVD box that it has an R rating. The movie as it is on this DVD could easily get a PG-13 rating or maybe pass as a PG rated film. If you are in fact looking for a heavily cleaned up version of this film, this release might be your ticket. But, if you think by ordering this you're getting the R rated thriller that you remember, think again, this DVD edition is the watered down TV edit.

Adapted from the short story by John Cheever, this Terrence McNally screenplay for Public Television, stars Lawrence Luckinbill as a self-centered business executive and Mary Beth Hurt as the mentally ill secretary he has hired, seduced, and then fired. Directed by James Ivory, this 1979 drama builds considerable suspense based upon the loathsome behavior of executive John Blake (Luckinbill), whose high-handed and egotistical treatment of his wife, son, neighbors, employees, and the vulnerable Jane Dent (Hurt) cause immense pain to everyone but himself. His level of cruelty knows no bounds.

Ivory directs this screenplay with split second timing. Not a single detail is irrelevant, no scenes last for more than a minute or two, and the camera focuses almost totally on Luckinbill (as Blake) and what passes for emotion on his face. Blake's cold-blooded ... Read More
