1.Apocalypse Now starring: Sam Bottoms, Marlon Brando, Bo Byers, Colleen Camp, Robert Duvall

VHS : Apocalypse Now
Definitely one of the best Vietnam war movies out there. It is more about the psychological trama of the Vienam war which I liked. It can seem a little out there from time to time but that's to get the viewer to understand it from the main character's point of view. This is definitely not for the younger kids out there and it is pretty intense. It is a must have for any DVD collection. It is one of those classic movies everyone has to see at least once. The acting is amazing. Just an overall great movie.

VHS : The Execution of Private Slovik
Private Eddie Slovik was the only Army deserter to be shot in WW II, the first since the Civil War. This TV film is a dramatization of the events. [No mention of the soldiers who were executed for murder or rape.] The red keystone patch on the shoulders identify their outfit. In reality, the firing squad had no regrets about their job, or so the books say. The beginning spends time on the details of the execution, slowing the pace. Then there are flashbacks to Slovik's past. Time in jail made him 4F, the war made jobs plentiful. Eddie tells of his bad luck and his petty thefts; he hung out with a bad crowd. A good job and a marriage changed his life for the better. But change is the only constant in this world. The need for recruits caused the draft board to revise the status of now married Eddie to ... I usually love to show Eyewitness DVDs for my science classes. The kids enjoy them and they usually remain engaged. This video, however, did not keep my students interested for longer then 10 min. The graphics are very outdated and some of the information seemed pointless (comparision of dinos to building machinery). I realize they cannot have live shots, but the claymation was obviously far older then the dvd production. A few CGI scenes would have helped immensely.

Video Release Date: May 30, 1996

Martin Sheen, Jack Albertson and Patricia Neal star in this film, with few other supporting cast members.

Sheen is a returning army corporal following the Second World War. Jack Albertson plays his father, a harsh, dictatorial man who is inclined to lay down the law in the household. His mother, Patricia Neal, is his long-suffering wife who manages to get her licks in. A dysfunctional family, to say the least.

The young soldier manages to sort things out in the end. It is not, really, a surprise ending: rather as happy an ending as might be expected under the circumstances.

They all played their parts well. Probably Albertson played his ... Read More

VHS : Rage
Yes, it was the 70s. I saw this as a young father or 4, alone. My wife wouldn't go, she had read a review. Within the structure of the film there was much to breed hate and mistrust. The acting was as precise as a scalpel, thinly drawn and never over the line. I am relating my impressions of seeing this film in its original theatrical run over 35 years ago. Rage struck me right up front, full-faced, and it has never completely left my mind. Richard Basehart and Martin Sheen play off each other, and George C. Scott, with just enough character to give it a bitter taste of reality. The scariest thing is that they appear as people you would actually know in real life.

Viewing this Little movie on the little screen lost some of its impact due, I feel, to the lack of the VHS format to fill out ... Read More

Purchased video to use as supplement for History Of Medicine class (4th grade). Was unhappy with the way things of a "mystical" nature were included in the material. I don't understand how the Producers could justify including information on Tarot Cards in the video. After all, we were looking for information on Skeleton's, not an introduction into foretunetelling. Also,I didn't care for the many references to man's "evolutionary" process from beast to man. Again, wasn't looking for a intro. into the Theory of Evolution.

The material that did foucs on the Skeletal System was good, but cluttered with a great deal of unecessary tid bits that took away from the video itself. I ended up turning off the video about 5-7 mintues from the end.

7.The American President starring: Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith
directed by: Rob Reiner
January 12, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The American President
This is a skilfully directed and performed piece of leftist propaganda that holds its punches until the film is 80% complete. Then Rob Reiner unloads on you in a presidential speech that contains all the extreme and often crude left wing views that dominate contemporary Hollywood. The huge talents of Bening and Douglas are wasted. The film's writer deserves a special raspberry award for muddying an otherwise unbelievable script. All in all, this film is just the ticket for Michael Moore fans. For people even slightly higher on the intellectual ladder, The American President is a disappointing waste of time.

I saw this unintentionally as I went to the cinema to see the other film of a double feature. This was the most amazing surprise of my life. Unlike other King films, this isn't really horror - no goblins, unless you count the evil Stillson.

Others have written well about this film. I'd just like to say that if you like psychological thrillers with a twist, you'll love this film.

9.Wall Street (1987) starring: Frank Adonis, John Capodice, Franklin Cover, Michael Douglas, Faith Geer

VHS : Wall Street (1987)
Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" chronicles the rise of unbridled greed, of reckless gambling with the other people's money, of soulless financiers whose God is cash. Some of the details are dated now -- the opening shots of the World Trade Towers, the IBM dumb terminals everywhere, Motorola "brick" wireless phones, the dollar amounts thrown about as astronomical in 1985 -- but the story behind the details and the motivations of the characters are as good a lesson as you're going to find. As a matter of fact, in the extras it is revealed that the director and cast used Bear Stearns as the model for their portrayals. How ironic then that the "Wall Street" tagline, "Greed is good," should end up eulogizing the era of narcissistic excess that the movie portrays.

10.Sweet Hostage starring: Linda Blair, Martin Sheen, Jeanne Cooper, Lee de Broux, Bert Remsen
directed by: Lee Philips

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Sweet Hostage
Sweet Hostage first aired in 1975 as a TV movie. Sheen's energetic, lyrical performance captured the imagination of a bookish 12 year old who had a few things in common with Linda Blair's lonely tomboy, Doris Mae. The movie engendered in me a life long love of the well spoken word, a fondness for the poetry Blake and Coleridge, and a terrific crush on Martin Sheen.

There are plenty of other reviews here which tell you more about the quality of this touching movie - read them. And if you think you'd like to see Sweet Hostage (which is notoriously hard to find on VHS and doesn't seem to exist legitimately on DVD) or like me you just need to own a copy of this movie so you can watch it again and again; You can vote cast your vote on the TMC website to have Sweet Hostage transferred to DVD. If enough people vote; perhaps ... Read More
