VHS : Stand By Me (Slip)
I expected something different from `Stand by Me'; that is, since it was written by Stephen King (the novella from which the film was adapted from was) I was expecting something thrilling or scary. What I got was something completely opposite yet equally engaging. Instead of a horror film or even a tense thriller, we are presented with a deeply moving story about friendship, relationships and boyhood. `Stand by Me' is a beautifully told story of adolescence; of four boys who find that central part of themselves over a weekend trek through the woods.

Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern are on the brink of their teenage years. Growing up in the 50's has not been too kind to them. Their families are rocky as is their relationships with them. Gordie, who narrates the story as an adult ... Read More

Well, I have to disagree with the self-proclaimed "truth seeker". "truth seeker" clearly has no appreciation for spoofs in general. This movie is very entertaining. To enjoy a good spoof, you have to appreciate the movies that helped create it. In any case, the Silence of the Hams is a very funny experience. Using some of the greatest movies like Silence of the Lams and Psycho, this is just wonderful film work. Much worth the price of this hard-to-find video.

VHS : Payback (1994, Unrated/Special Director's Cut, SP)
The other reviews of this movie are way too kind. There is very little "steam" in this movie. Not a bad plot, but let's be honest, that's not why we watch these direct to video / cinemax softcore movies. Joan Severance does look good as usual. However, the erotica scenes are few and far between and there is virtually nothing more revealing in the unrated version so don't spend your $ here. Joan looks at her best putting on shiny white thigh highs underneath a tight yellow dress, but nothing happens with her and this luscious outfit. A complete waste. This is bound to disappoint so don't be misled by the other reviews.

This is a film that really should suck royally. Think about it: Charlie Sheen, whose appearance has usually been a recipe for mediocrity; Kristy Swanson: anyone remember her for "acting" in anything else other than the Buffy movie? No, thought not.

But you know what, this film is wonderful. so good in fact that it is one of my favourites ever. Both Sheen and Swanson are really likeable in their roles. But what makes it even better is the wonderful support. Henry Rollins and Josh Mostel are simply wonderful as a pair of purusing cops roped into a reality cop show. Mostel's rather resigned, anxious pathos plays fantastically against Rollins' rapidly unravelling messianic monomania. Ray Wise as Swanson's multi-millionaire father is a treat, as are Anthony Keidis and Flea, playing a couple of glory-hunting ... Read More

VHS : Cherry 2000
My friend and I had a pact all through the 1970s and 80s, and we petered out in the 1990s when we realized that what we had was just a pie in the sky. Our mission was to artificially prolong the careers of our two favorite stars, Kim Basinger and Melanie Griffith, by actually showing up in the movie theaters, for all their various releases.

This entailed sometimes a lot of loneliness, as often enough we were the only two paying customers in the theater, but one good thing is we hardly ever had to wait on line. At the multiplex there would be huge long lines for DIE HARD or ROGER RABBIT, but we'd be sitting pretty, able to slip into CHERRY 2000 hours ahead of time and stay for multiple shows if we liked (though this was actually cheating, as we needed our box office dollar to register in the far echoes ... I bought the DVD of Starship Troopers for my wife (believe it or not). She had a video tape of Starship Troopers but the VCR ate it and I am surprising her with the DVD for Christmas. I am very satisfied with the price and the shipping time was ok.
