This is a personal favorite. The author of the book, Nevil Shute, was an aircraft engineer and worked on the Airship R100. He also worked with the famous inventor Barnes Wallis. These facts give the film some credibility in regards to metallergy. Reading the book might give insight into the accuracy the film-maker put into the scientific statements Stewart's character spoke.

Regardless of the details it is still a good picture.

VHS : Golden Earrings
Marlene Dietrich plays the gypsy Lydia, and in her raggedy clothes, black wig, and dark makeup, gives a whole other take on what sexy is all about. (Her gorgeous legs and bare feet get plenty of look-see throughout the picture.) Set near the beginning of WW II in the Black Forest of Germany, Dietrich helps Ray Milland escape the Nazis and obtain a secret poison gas formula. The plot is a bit thin, but both Milland and especially Dietrich put everything into their roles. The golden earrings are a prop used to help disguise Milland, and when he receives them in a box in London after the war, he knows they come from Dietrich who is waiting for him. It's during his flight back to Germany that he relates the story in flashback. Sure enough, after hiking to the spot he had last left her, years before, ... Read More

We have a delirious picture. Filmed in the late years of the WW2, and after making the penetrating and Faustian "Devil and Mr. Webster", Dieterle decided to bet for this tongue in the cheek movie; inspiring in Budu saved from waters, the central character is a sympathetic and talented beggar who practices magic and decides to break the walls with just an intention in mind: to bring the expected happiness of his daughter who is love with a Caliph; but on the road there will be more laughable and funny situations.

Marlene Dietrich stole the show with her erotic appearance in an Arabian dance painted of gold (a pioneer device for Goldfinger, perhaps?).

Go for this version that to my mind remains several echelons respect the 1955 version. But in last instance you have the last word. ... Read More

4.Morocco starring: Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Adolphe Menjou, Ullrich Haupt, Eve Southern
directed by: Josef von Sternberg

VHS : Morocco

This was Marlene Dietrich's first American movie, which came hard on the heels of THE BLUE ANGEL. She plays a sultry nightclub singer who somehow has made her way to Morocco. There she meets two men: Adolphe Menjou - rich, devoted to her, but obviously dull; and Gary Cooper - a devil-may-care French Legionnaire, who loves her but won't show it. No doubt whom she falls for.

Joseph von Sternberg directed and Dietrich was his raison d'etre - he lavished on her everything that would give her the best advantage: lighting, make-up, camera angles. She shines as a femme fatale who would cast off men like burnt matchsticks, until she meets Cooper. Coop plods along as he did in just about every picture he was in, handicapped even more here because of Sternberg's disdain for him.

VHS : Witness for the Prosecution
If you haven't seen it, and haven't read Witness in Death, here's what it's about: Leonard Vole (Tyrone Power) is accused of killing a wealthy widow, and he applies to Sir Wilfrid (Charles Laughton), the best barrister in England, to defend him. But Sir Wilfrid's health is failing, and he initially refuses, until actually meeting Leonard convinces him to take the case.

Leonard's wife Christine (Marlene Dietrich) is his alibi, but she's not very believable when she talks to Sir Wilfrid, and indeed she ends up as a witness for the prosecution.

Even though I knew the plot, including the twists and turns, from reading Witness in Death, the movie itself was more than just the sum of its parts. The drama of whodunit and how and why was interspersed with humor, much of it coming from interactions between Sir ... Read More

A bomb goes off in a car across the Mexican border and a man is chosen to take the rap. Meanwhile another man of the law who's on his way to his honeymoon with his bride, suspects a police frame-up. Forced by his conscience, he takes on the corrupt and the criminal and puts himself and his newlywed wife in grave danger. Welles' Touch Of Evil is a cruel-realized poem of corruption, greed and murder. It's a dark, vicious, chaotic world and from the first scene to the last, Welles holds it together, pulls it apart and unleashes it with an electrical charge! The great musical score supports the stunning action and photography!

If your a John Wayne fan, and are looking for a good action movie, avoid this one at ALL costs! On the otherhand, if your looking for a talky melodrama, then this one is for you. You can forgive Duke for being in this, as he was involved in a number of clunkers from the early 40s ("Reunion In France", "Lady For a Night", etc...); and was still not a major movie star at this point in his career.

This is a must see for Dietrich fans. The chemistry between Dietrich and Donat is amazing especially considering he was sick during filming. This is my favorite Dietrich film, it is beautiful to watch. The beginning when she is overtaken by the mob is poetic eye candy.

I have owned and watched several versions of this film. I even have the film script. I would say that the Kino two DVD versions is the best presentation so far. I watched both the English and German versions I find the story depressing but the telling of it and the acting fascinating.

A real added plus is the commentary by German Film Historian Werner Sedendorf. He brought up information directly relating to the film at the time it was relevant. Then he left some berating room so you could absorb and experience the information. To many commentaries turn into soap-box discussions or rill in slow times with useful information that however is irrelevant to the film at the time. The film has so much hidden death and lost culture that after the commentary you will have to watch it again.

The English version is not ... Read More
