VHS : John & Yoko: Love Story
i loved this movie- have already watched it twice. i have seen other actors "portray" john, but this actor seems to me to have done one of the best, if not the best, portraits of john. the actor is very good at conveying many emotions, seemingly very much like we would think john may have reacted. mannerisms are amazing, but the acting depth really makes this a cut above the made-for -t.v. movie that it is.

the detail is spot on, for fans who are familiar with the scenes, clothing, etc. of the time periods depicted. at times the tableau is right out of a photograph, recreated. amazing. john and yoko's music is used in various ways all through the movie, to great effect. the heartbreaking ending is mostly left to our imaginations and our pained recollections of that night.... ... VHS : Catherine the Great
This movie is not worth purchasing or watching. It is NOTHING like the mini-series, "Young Catherine" starring Julia Ormond in 1991. I returned it.
It seems that the mini series is unavailable at this time in (true) DVD format. If it ever becomes available it is the production to watch concerning the life and times of "Catherine the Great".

This is one of my all-time favorite black comedies, but very obscure. Ray McAnally (played the bishop in The Mission) and Bernard Hill (played the captain in Titanic) spar in an alice-in-wonderland nightmare night as catholic and protestant groups are booked simultaneous in a outskirts-urban nightclub in Ireland for New Years Eve. I think it's brilliant but I should warn you, I've played it for a few people who stared in silence. In the tradition of older, 1950s English black comedies and parlor comedies but with the black humor element turned way up for the 80s. It also makes a statement about ethnic prejudice and the grim results which is timeless and timely in 2007, twenty years later.

VHS : The Grand - Series 2 Boxed Set
This is the final portion of the story of The Grand. The history adds substance to the film and the characters as they react to the events of the day. I highly recommend it!

VHS : Rainbow, The

An interesting adaptation of part of the D.H. Lawrence novel of the same title. Sammi Davis plays Ursala, the young woman who is eager to experience Life. One wishes for more depth of passion from this woman than we get here (her whiny voice is a definite negative), but the Lawrence themes of love, marriage, and personal freedom are presented in an interesting way.

Lawrence's book is long and thorough; director Ken Russell errs by merely touching upon certain themes that were more fully explored in the book (the miners, for instance, and the war) and then letting them drop. It also ends abruptly with Davis chasing the rainbow. The movie lacks depth of feeling and intelligence, but it's well photographed and the whole thing might be closer to Lawrence than we'd like to admit.

This wonderful little thriller from over ten years ago was largely overlooked when it was first released, although I did manage to catch a look at it when it hit theatres. Then, as now, I was very impressed with its rather terrifying story about a young and ambitious hospital janitor (played wonderfully by Paul McGann) unhappy with his lot in life and seizing upon the opportunity of a lifetime of becoming what he really wants to be - a doctor, but with frighteningly tragic results. The film is tightly directed, scripted and acted by a first rate British cast which includes the always wonderful Tom Wilkinson and the 'delicious' Amanda Donohoe - probably more famous for her rather risque role in the TV series LA Law from some years back. If you're in the mood for a menacing, un-nerving thriller without the traditional twists and predictable ... Read More
