The reviewer is right who stated the mainstream doesn't get Gilliam. Bottom line is people will still be talking about this movie 100 years from now when most of the Academy pop favs will be forgotten. I thought I had to clarify what is actually happening and why Depp is in LV to begin with.

"The novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas accounts for two trips to Las Vegas, Nevada, that Hunter S. Thompson and attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta took in March and April of 1971. He was writing an exposé for Rolling Stone magazine about the killing of Ruben Salazar, the Mexican-American television journalist whom officers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shot in the head, at close range, with a tear gas grenade during the National Chicano Moratorium March against the Vietnam War ... I watched this movie a long time ago but remember every detail of it. The absolute most saddest thing for any Father to go through especially after having just lost a wife but given this was the 1930's nothing is too surprising; I hope there has been no such other painful incident as this one, Jackson was truly a strong and persistent Father. Nonetheless the story has a bitter-sweet ending. Overall guaranteed to make you cry.

PLOT: Mark Harmon as Ted Bundy~ he nailed this performance~ excellent portait of Ted the man with charm and looks enough to fool JUST about everyone~ very good detailed.

Ted Bundy was charming and was headed to law school. He loved women and women loved him~ his charm, wit, very empathetic and most of all handsome looks made him stand out~ but his superior IQ all gave him the means to vent his Psychopathic personality and be very successful at serial killing. The actual number is still (some believe over 100 in 6 or more states)... BUT in "this" version about 20 girls over many years (1974-1978) were succesfully killed by TED~ why his own friends believe him innocent~ Ted has the charm to have girl friends and be fairly nice to them~ they fall in love with his charm and looks~ but some where the ... Mark Harmon's acting is the saving grace for this disjointed and somewhat bizarre movie. One of the problems with this movie is the jumping from one situation to the next, with no iota of sense that it's even realistic to follow in that train of thought.
Another problem? how do you get from a presumed dead/now missing husband, to a vision/dream that has haunted you for a year?

and better yet, how do you get from a weak/recovering from a head injury to being possessesed in a negative way - that's supposed to be from a "Godly" vision?
Please!
as I said, Mark's portrayal of what was obviously a tough role to play, saved the day on this one.
If you aren't a fan of his - pick another movie.

This is the kind of "B" film you saw all through the 1940's. It is definitely a guy film, and a guilty pleasure. It's a kick back and relax movie for a weekend afternoon with a big sub and a bigger coke. It is probably best to watch alone, however, so no one is around to point out how dumb it is.

Cinematographer John Seales, who photographed Picnic at Hanging Rock and The English Patient, made this old-fashioned action adventure. Mark Harmon is the stoic hero and Deborah Unger is about as gorgeous as the island of Vanuatu where this was filmed. Even the song Seales chose to frame the film around recalls the 1940's and the terrific Australian Kate Ceberano gets to sing a bit of "Till There Was You" as the closing credits roll.

Frank Flynn (Mark Harmon) is tending bar at "The Blue Nile" in ... Read More

In a recent interview on the "Director's" series on TV, Lawrence
Kasdan noted that Kevin Costner was already well into production on
this "series", when he asked Kasdan to come on as Director. Costner
was preparing a mini-series for HBO of "Earp", and, when that fell
through he needed help in reshaping it as a movie. Kasdan did what
he could, but it was too late to do very much in the way of cutting
the series down. Other: I love this film, and I love the fact that
Earp never took a bullet, lived to a ripe old age, and was buried in
a Jewish cemetary near San Francisco near his wife "Josie"...RIP
