VHS : Only Love
Well, well, well, if I didn't read the book first, maybe I would have had diferent opinion on this movie. But I think the way they end the movie did total injustice to the original story of the book. Correct me if I am wrong but the impression I got from the book was that Evie was his true love from the beginning and it was his realization of that and finally being free from his obseession over Silvia made it possible for him to find the music again.

In movie, they end it the way make you think that Silvia was his true love then and now and her love and his grief over her death made him find his lost music. They made it look like Evie is second best after all. Wrong, wrong, wrong way to interpret teh book.

I know you have to look at the book and the movie seperately but since ... Read More

VHS : Anger Management
Unquestionably this movie was never going for plausibility. A relatively mild-mannered man, Dave Buznik finds himself in the charge of Buddy, a slightly potty anger management therapist, after an altercation on a plane finds Dave in court. Of course, the fact he's mild-mannered is half the joke... I never really found Adam Sandler funny. He's far better as a straight actor with a light-hearted approach. This movie confirms this, as Jack Nicholson, as Buddy, is a class above him at all times. Jack is simply funnier, and Hollywood royalty. As for 'laugh-factor', yes there are definitely some funny moments, especially if you leave your brain at the door, but it's not what it perhaps could have been. I feel more could have been made of the rest of the cast, such as Torturro, Guizman, Harrellson (small part). ... Read More

Zandalee, Zandalee, Zandalee.

Where do I start? Well, I watched this movie on cable a couple of times when I was still a child, and I remember it being a good but forbidden movie. I decided to buy the movie before it became obsolete and enjoy a smut classic. But watching it as an adult has shown me one thing: it's bad in every way. From the bad Louisiana accents to the narcotics inspired acting by Nicolas Cage to the pedestrian acting by Ericka Alexander to the silly script writing. It's very bad. Even the s/ex scenes are not as good as I remembered: a couple come off as rape scenes, which will always be dangerous considering how many confuse rape with consentual desire already. I guess my changing view about Zandalee says a lot about the eyes and mind of a 12 year old versus that of a 25 year ... Read More

VHS : My Own Country
It's a sad but yet beautiful story of love for humanity. Dr. Abraham Verghese came to America to practice medicine. His specialty is infectious disease. He came here in the '80s so of course he has to deal with AIDS. At that time you would not think it would be in Tennessee. He treated his patients with not just respect but with love. He truly cared about his patients. To the point his marriage was in jeopardy.

He was from India and Johnson City, Tennessee was where he ended up. He wasn't treated like a outsider, the town folks treated him with dignity, as one of their own. Dr. Verghese felt like it was his own country.

So many people think Southerners are a cruel backward people like in Deliverance. They're not. They may be behind the times but if you treat them respectfully, they will bend ... Read More

VHS : In the Bedroom
As the story opens in a Maine lobster town, we meet young Matt Fowler, home from college for the summer, who has fallen in love with an older divorcee with two children. Although Matt says it's not serious, his parents are worried. And the woman's ex-husband is a violent man.

The title, "In the Bedroom," refers not to torrid love scenes but is slang for "in a lobster trap;" early on we learn that if two male lobsters are "in the bedroom" with a female, the males will tear each other apart. That's the plot, in a nutshell. Tom Wilkerson and Sissy Spacek play Matt's parents; he's good in a stiff-upper-lip way, but she still looks like Carrie to me and didn't ring true. William Mapother ("Ethan" in Lost) is absolutely chilling as the brutal ex-husband.

While the grieving process is honestly portrayed ... Read More

I loved it immediately. If you've been to Venice, Rome and Amalfi; for the scenery alone this is the movie for you. The emotional manipulations are a bit much here. The cute kid. The estranged daughter. The next door party girl mom. Gena Rowlands plays a middle aged mom with no one to care for until she 'adopts' the mixed up mess next door. It's a bit improbable because the LA neighborhood looks pretty upscale and way too expensive for the Marisa Tomei loser and her even worse hubby. Still, I'd rather watch this than a shoot em up with no redeeming social value. It's a decent drama. Just not particularly special.

VHS : What Women Want
First, the bad things: formulaic chick flic. Make that CHICK FLIC. The other bad thing, is Helen Hunt is as dry and unappealing as always (she sleepwalks through her performance, I'm not sure she ever felt pain at all when she was "acting" emotionally distraught). In addition, there aren't enough laughs to keep a guy interested when his girlfriend/wife makes him watch this. In addition, the "thoughts" that women have in the movie are both far too PG and PC to be believable, and any man who swallows that crap is doomed. This is what women would like to think of themselves thinking, not what they really think about most of the time (not that I would know, which is the point, right?). Alan Alda smarms his way through another role where he can't stop calling attention to the fact that he is Alan Alda. Would someone take up a collection for some ... Read More

VHS : Chaplin
In the hands of director Richard Attenborough, Charlie Chaplin's life story becomes a sweeping and touching drama. Robert Downey, Jr. gives an unforgettable performance as Chaplin, who rose from the slums of London to become Hollywood's favorite silent movie character, the Tramp. Along the way, Charlie had to deal with his mother's insanity, his love affairs, marriages, and a paternity scandal, all involving much younger women, and investigation by none other than J. Edgar Hoover.

This very entertaining story vividly recreates the beginnings of the movie industry. The sets and costumes are magnificent, as is the John Barry soundtrack, which features Chaplin's own song, "Smile." Downey gives the performance of a lifetime playing a controversial but ultimately very likeable hero over a span of sixty years. He oozes charisma.
