VHS : Hear My Song
"Hear My Song" (1992), an Irish film, a romantic musical comedy/drama, was written by its star, Adrian Dunbar, with Peter Chelsom, its first-time director, and is filmed on location in gritty Liverpool, England, and the lovely Irish countryside. It's based on the life story of the Irish tenor Josef Locke, born Joseph McLaughlin, who knew great success in England, but was driven back to his home country by the tax man.

Adrian Dunbar, a frequently-seen actor, plays Micky O'Neill, who has leased a down-at-heels Liverpool nightclub from the large and boisterous Irish-English Ryan family (Liverpool has lots of Irish immigrants, and their descendents). He proceeds to run the club further into the ground through bad bookings; first there's Franc Cinatra, then Mr. X, allegedly Joe Locke. ... Read More

I LOVE this movie....firstly because I am Irish and can really relate to the story. Secondly, just to watch Meryl Streep play her role with such a convincing Irish accent, makes me admire her more than ever. Many of my Irish friends can recite lines from the movie off by heart......it is a treasure

VHS : The Van
I just watched this for the first time in a few years and laughed aloud once again. As a pure comedy and portrait of Irish life just prior to the Celtic Tiger '90's, this film is unbeatable. A great "fillum". Something interesting:

I was in the mood to see The Van and The Snapper again (having just rented The Commitments at my local Blockbuster) and was lamenting the fact that they are so hard to find. My local rare-release rental shop, Movie Madness, is the only place I was sure of finding them. However, having just got the Tivo-style DVR from Comcast Cable I decided to do a search for The Snapper and The Van without much hope of success. I was amazed to find both films immediately on HBO channels and was saved a trip to the video store.

VHS : Not Wanted (1949)
Sally Forrest stars as Sally, a nineteen year old girl who gets involved with pianist Leo Penn, falls hard for him, even following him to another town to be with him. He's not interested, so she takes up with a boyish war veteran, played earnestly by Keefe Brasselle. When she discovers she is pregnant by Penn, her life is turned upside down again. The storyline is presented straightforwardly, something that surprised me given that the film was made in 1949. Actress Ida Lupino directed most of the film, although she is not credited, and in some ways, it matches the tough character she so often played on screen. The film presents the girl's plight with heart, but doesn't really get sentimental. It's starkly photographed, with elements of silent film incorporated, as long passages of time in the film ... VHS : Circle of Friends
I know that this is quite different from the original story, but it's still a good movie. It's Hollywood-ized, but it's not so Hollywood-ized that it just flings Benny back into Jack's arms as if nothing happened.

I hadn't watched this and years and popped the DVD in to see if I wanted to keep it or resell it. I think I'll keep it. I'd forgotten how good a movie it is. It's such a relief these days to see a film with so many reasonable, believable characters when so many movies now seem to sell themselves on outlandishness.

It was HUGELY refreshing to see a girl who really is big--tall and solid--playing a character that's supposed to be big. She is not at all unattractive and is not portrayed as plain, awkward, or "nerdy" (as un-beauties usually are). She's just not a silver ... Read More
