VHS : Dancers
Dancers is enjoyable to watch. The plot is hokey, at the very least, but it has to tie the dancing in somehow. The dance scenes are beautiful all around and when those sequences cut to the movie's plot it is dissapointing but it makes you look forward to enjoying the next dance scene.

Yes, I admit, you may be tempted to fast forward but it's not nearly as painful as The Turning Point where the dancing scenes were sparse. (Or Center Stage which was a complete waste) In this movie there are plenty of beautiful dance scenes that overall make it worthwhile. Looking forward to DVD. Overall, it is enjoyable if you love Baryshnikov and the ballet Giselle. One of the better dance movies.

VHS : The Seduction of Mimi
For: The Seduction of Mimi (1972)
Studio: Fox Lorber (A Winstar Company)
DVD Release Date: March 31, 1998

One Star for the DVD: To produce a cheep widescreen version - Fox Lorber Home Video has taken the movie's full frame image version and has cropped off the top and bottom part of the image. Fox Lorber simply removed part of the image just to please those of us who prefer the widescreen format. Many times during the movie the bright light will bleed over into the black cropped bars producing a glowing horizontal line within the black bars.

Five Stars for the Movie: A great movie! I cannot wait to buy a new DVD release of his movie that is Restored, Digitally Re-mastered and presented in its true original aspect ratio. Until then I will just have to settle ... Read More

VHS : Summer Night
Lina Wertmuller's "Summer Night" (1986) or "Notte d'estate con profilo greco, occhi a mandorla e odore di basilico" (Summer Night, with Greek Profile, Almond Eyes and Scent of Basil) could pass as the companion piece to "Swept Away," made 12 years earlier. Both deal with socio-political conflict and sexual power-play with the lovely Mariangela Melato the central character in each. In "Summer Night," the tables are turned, with the man in chains and the woman holding the leash. Again Melato, now middle-aged, plays a rich upper-class woman, Signora Bolk. But this time she gets to kidnap Giuseppe 'Beppe' Catania (Michele Placido), a leftist rebel who has made a habit of kidnapping and holding members of the upper-class for ransom. She intends holding him for ransom instead, demanding the return of all the ... Read More

VHS : Flash Gordon
Maybe I could have understood the movie better if I wasn't having so much fun watching it! Why are Sam and Dale stuck out in the universe instead of going back to earth? Well, I'd stay out in space if the alternative was the dreary, dust-ridden planet we get a glimpse of at the beginning of the film. The movie picks up steam and color as soon as Dr. Zharkov kidnaps our hero and heroine and whisks them off to save the planet, and especially when they reach the court of the fabulous Ming the Merciless. Ridiculed for its "camp" qualities when it came out, and for the inadequate and dubbed acting of Sam J. Jones as "Flash," FLASH GORDON in fact tells its story in a relatively straightforward manner, while Jones is unexpectedly winning in a difficult role; as soon as he remembers his football plays in a ... VHS : Swept Away (Dubbed)
Plot Synopsis: A rich woman, Raffaella, and some friends rent a yacht to sail the Mediterranean Sea during summer. The sailor, Gennarino, who is a communist, does not like this woman but has to bear with her bad mood. One day she wakes up late in the afternoon and asks to be taken to land where everyone had gone earlier. Gennarino sets up a boat but during the trip, the boat breaks down. They spend the night in the middle of the sea.

"...Perhaps the wittiest, most ferocious staging of the battle of the sexes ever to be put on film."

VHS : Swept Away
I'm well aware of how a little locking horns between two people can have a guaranteed sexual frisson, but "Swept Away" really goes over the line into physical abuse. I had been greatly looking forward to this movie because I found the class-battle-goes-sexy-on-desert-island premise tempting, but the result was far from it. After a couple of tense days on a yacht where the wealthy Raffaella torments the crew member Gennarino with her nagging and disrespect, not to mention her endless political pontification, it's obvious that he's not going to hold back when he gets a chance. Perhaps I'm just too used to contemporary ideas about what's ok to do to a woman, but the reportedly "sexy" subjugation that happens is really Gennarino beating up Raffaella. It's not total brutality, but he really does get some blows in there, ... Read More
