VHS : Family Plot
The last ever Hitchcock film is a good movie, but lacks the cutting edge that his best movies always have. Contrary to some reviews I have read I thought the cast were fine and William Devane, Karen Black and Bruce Dern have all done many other interesting films. No doubt that Al Pacino would have been better though!

The main problem with the film is that is never really decides what it wants to be. There's some light black comedy and a bit of suspense but nothing really ever grabs you like his best films. The screenplay is by Ernest Lehman who wrote North By Northwest and its perhaps no coincidence that we get a scene from that great film recreated here (and played for laughs) when a car goes out of control going down a mountain road.

VHS : Fortune Cookie (B&W)
This is average endeavor for director Billy Wilder and his co-scenarist I.A.L. Diamond. That is to say that this is above average for most filmmakers. The obvious distinction of the film is the initial teaming of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. In this case, though, Lemmon wisely defers to Matthau's shyster lawyer and plays straight man. Matthau shines here and steals every scene he's in. Matthau won the Oscar in a supporting role which I find curious because it seemed to me to be a co-lead role. Cliff Osmond was pretty funny, too, as an insurance fraud investigator. The film drags in part particularly when Matthau isn't on screen but it does suffer from overlength. Two hours plus is a little long. Recommended with slight reservation.

VHS : Death of a Salesman (Broadway Theatre Archive)
I have always considered "Salesman" the greatest American play and saw the original production when I was only 15 and was floored. But, even allowing for my then easily impressionable age, I still believe I saw, as near as possible, theatrical perfection. Since then there have been many hundreds (thousands?) of productions including some excellent "revivals". But this is as close as you can get to that original production. Although the script was altered a bit because of tv constrictions, the power of the play shines through and you have the amazing performances of the original Willy and Linda Loman and a fine supporting cast. This is a must for anyone interested in the theatre whether playwriting, production, ot acting.

I really enjoyed this movie. Michael Douglas and Joe Don Baker shine in this nice little movie about an upper class well to do guy who takes off from his safe comfortable life and goes to work doing manual labor with a gang of brush clearers and workers. It is kind of a fish out of water movie but it isn't done in a goofy or silly way. Douglas's character really appreciates the things he learns and the realness of the people that he comes to really like.

I thought this was a really good movie and it is mostly a forgotten movie. If you like Michael Douglas or Joe Don Baker and you want to see them in very early roles check out this movie.

VHS : The Flying Nun Christmas
Here are two episodes from the totally delightful late 1960's comedy series "The Flying Nun" starring Sally Field as the perky and lovable Sister Bertrille. Despite being the target for alot of todays quite hardened critics this terrific little series lives on in people's hearts. I know I grew up watching it and still hold it in great affection.

This tape is the Christmas special and contains two episodes from the first season of the show. The first is the only Christmas themed episode of the series "Walking In A Winter Wonderland" which is a sentimental delight as Sister Bertrille gets into all types of trouble trying to bring to reality a dying wish of a visiting nun from Norway who wants to see one last white christmas. The second episode from later in the first season "The Reconversion Of ... Read More
