VHS : Mortal Storm
This WWII political drama starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, along with very young Robert Stack, Dan Dailey, Robert Young and of course, the Wizard of Oz, Frank Morgan, who is fabulous in this dramatic role, has been overlooked by the wizards of Hollywood. Due to the overall excellence of the film, great acting and wonderful scenes of Jimmy and Margaret "skiing" in the Alps at night, it should be listed, at least, as one of the best 100 films.

This was a very enjoyable movie. Jimmy Stewart fans will not be disappointed. It's humorous, sweet, and does a good job on the sensitive subject matter that is included in the story. I highly recommend it.

VHS : Shopworn Angel (1938)
SHOPWORN ANGEL is a movie about a worldly Broadway actress (Margaret Sullivan) who meets a doughboy (Jimmy Stewart) just before he leaves for France. Stewart is a naive cowboy from Texas who brags to his army buddies that he knows Sullivan. When they actually do meet Stewart immediately falls in love with her. The only complication is that Sullivan really loves her business manager Walter Pigeon. This awkward situation forces both Sullivan and Pigeon to look deeper and learn new truths about life and love.

Margaret Sullivan is superb as her character changes visibly from a spoiled and egotistical mess into a warm and giving adult. Stewart, Pigeon and Hattie McDaniel give their usual strong performances mostly playing themselves. Sullivan's singing is dubbed by Mary Martin.

"You know something funny? He didn't mention you either."

Margaret Sullavan's waif-like delicacy proved perfect for this Wiliam Wyler film adaptation of Ferenc Molnar's fanciful play about a young orphan who causes confusion by trying to do a good deed and ends up finding love in the process. Wyler also fell under Sullavan's spell while filming this and the two became a couple.

A fabulous cast that includes Frank Morgan, Herbert Marshall, Eric Blore, Beulah Bondi, and Reginald Owen in a comic gem of a performance, act out Preston Sturges screenplay to marvelous perfection. Wyler and Sullavan let the charm slowly build, each new ingredient adding to its flavor until this sweet and delicate confection can't be resisted.

VHS : Three Comrades
Well-done heartbreaker scripted (partly) by F. Scott Fitzgerald - and the only picture he worked on where he was so credited (though to his anger much of the dialogue he wrote was ultimately changed). Set in Germany right after WW I, Margaret Sullavan plays the heart-throb of three returning German soldiers (Robert Taylor, Franchot Tone, and Robert Young), who now are partners in an auto repair company. Although all three of them love Sullavan, it's a testament to their friendship that when she decides to marry Taylor, the other two are actually happy for him. The tragedy comes in the fact that Sullavan is suffering from TB and hasn't much time to live. Sullavan is wonderful and this is one of her best performances on film. Her throaty voice and eloquence are most effective and are impossible not to respond to. The ... Read More

VHS : So Ends Our Night
This is an unjustly neglected work: complex, subtle, and harrowing in its treatment of one of the major tragedies of the 20th Century: the rise of Nazi Germany and the persecution of that murderous regime of jews and of course, any opponents.
One of the more striking features of the film is that it was released in 1941, well before the full horror of the Nazi concentration camps was made known to the world, and yet "So Ends our Night" eerily captures the totalitarian abomination taking over Europe at the time.
The film, directed by John Cromwell, is based on the novel "Floatsam" by Erich Maria Remarque, the author of "All Quiet on the Western Front" and whose books were burned and banned by the Nazi regime. Having to flee Germany himself to escape certain death, Remarque was more than well suited to document the plight of "people ... Read More
