Let's face it--most people (not all) want to see this, to see the beautiful and extraordinarily talented Yma Sumac. She is included in the cast credits (even touted) yet she is in it all of a few seconds. I agree with the other reviewer, she was featured no more than an any extra. And other than her, the movie isn't so interesting. What is somewhat ironic about this, is that Sumac's only other U.S. film, "Secret of the Incas" is not at all interesting except for her parts, as well! In truth, it was she, not Paramount, who decided she would do no more films.

This is a wonderful film which was the basis for O'Brother, Where Art Thou? by the Coen Brothers years later. A wealthy film director decides that his comedies are trivial and he must make an "important" film about the lowest classes in the United States. He poses as a hobo and travels California to get to know the lowest classes, at one point meeting Veronica Lake. His lark takes a turn towards reality when he loses his money and ID and ends up truly living the life of a hobo including time on a chain gang.

It's always amazed me how director Charles F. Haas managed to orchestrate the outstanding cast that he had for _Girls Town_. The amount of talent assembled for this low-budget classic is virtually unprecedented: Mamie Van Doren, Mel Torme, Ray Anthony (Mamie's real life husband during filming), Paul Anka, Gloria Talbott, Elinor Donahue, Gigi Perreau and The Platters.

Mamie Van Doren's portrayal of trash-talking Silver Morgan is a "crazy, cool, fantabulous" camp classic. Van Doren's voluptuous figure is enhanced with push-up bras and padded panty girdles before it is poured into a series of revealing outfits. There's no doubt about it -- this girl puts out! Gloria Talbot and Peggy Moffitt exchange coy glances as Paul Anka sings "When Somebody Loves You", while the _Girls Town_ girls dance with each other ... Read More

VHS : Good Day for a Hanging
A town marshal is shot and killed while pursuing a group of fleeing bank robbers. Community pillar Ben Cutler (Fred MacMurray) reluctantly agrees to become the new marshal. Cutler, a member of the outlaw-chasing posse, wounds and apprehends the trigger man, bad boy Eddie `The Kid' Campbell (Robert Vaughn.)
With Vaughn as a troubled youth - he never had a chance given the way he growed up - and MacMurray the middle aged, moral man at odds with the apathetic town he defends, think of GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING as a mixture of The Blackboard Jungle and High Noon, with a shady defense attorney and an extended courtroom scene thrown in for good measure.
The 1950s were the decade of message westerns, or a least westerns with a social sense and an accusatory finger to point. 1959's GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING isn't as strident ... Read More
