I've loved this gem of a comedy since I was a kid, and nothing else makes me feel better than dusting it off and watching it again with fresh eyes. Sharing the experience with friends seeing it for the first time is a particular joy, since many have never seen this wonderful comedy -- although they have heard the title. The talent of the actors and the sparkling script put this film head-and-shoulders above fantasy films of today.

Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what the Marx Bros. influenced, but its difficult to see what influenced them, other than the rich tradition of music hall.

However, again, when I say that they are totally unique, I'm referring to something else. If one notices carefully at all the groups and individuals that the Marx Brothers ... Read More

VHS : A Night at the Opera
When the Marx Brothers came to MGM in 1935, boy wonder producer Irving Thalberg had the good commercial sense to package them in a genuine musical comedy. Their anarchic comedy may have been slightly better served in some earlier Paramount comedies but never were they better showcased than here, their most popular film because of the balance of entertainment on offer and the quality of the production values provided by MGM, the Rolls Royce of film studios at the time.

For those who know the Marx Brothers, there is little to say. Furthermore, there are lots of excellent Amazon reviews which can fill you in. For those younger people who may not know the team, do yourself a favour and watch this film. You may baulk at the love interest sub plot and the music but don't miss some of the very best comedy ... VHS : A Day at the Races
When the Marx Brothers came to MGM in 1935, boy wonder producer Irving Thalberg had the good commercial sense to package them in a genuine musical comedy which widened their box office appeal enormously although it detracted from the pure gold of their earlier anarchic Paramount comedies.

"A Day at the Races" followed the formula of the hugely successful "A Night at the Opera", but it was was the beginning of the end of their golden period. The problem is simply that while the boys are very good, there is just not enough of them and in inverse proportion, a dumb love story with the charming Allan Jones and the equally charming but sappy Maureen O'Sullivan. Also, there is a notable softening of their characters, particularly Harpo and that diminishes them.

The film also has 2 major production ... Read More

I have never been as big a fan of The Marx Brothers as I have been of other great comedy teams, be it the verbal brilliance of Abbott & Costello, the pathos laden antics of Laurel & Hardy, nor the violent slapstick of The Three Stooges. The reason is because the team's success or failure basically falls all on the shoulders of its lone truly brilliant member, Groucho Marx. The first film to feature the zany antics of the brothers was the 1929 talkie film of their 1926 Broadway comedy hit, The Cocoanuts. They did, however, self-finance an earlier silent film called Humorisk, which was a critical disaster, in its lone showing, and of which no known copies seem to exist. In a sense, the heart of the brothers' act in all their films is not when the three (or four, including the forgettable Zeppo, who plays a hotel desk ... Read More

VHS : Zotz
I saw this movie when I must have been eight years old. I must confess I have not seen it since. But it is one of those bizarre films which sticks to the ribs of my mind. I remember it as a black and white comedy. Not a Ha Ha laugh out loud comedy, but as something that makes you think. The plot involves a college professor who decyphers the inscription on an amulet found in the temple of an ancient god. The god's name is Zotz. He is a much more intesting god than the phoney windbag in the Old Testament, who also has a hidden name (maybe if Jews say it, it makes them fart - I wouldn't know). If you hold the amulet - actually a coin about the size of a quarter - and say "Zotz," whatever you are looking at goes into slow motion. If you point at something while holding the amulet, it experiences a sharp pain. And if you point and say "Zotz" ... Read More

The depression is finally arrived and the Marx Brothers are having it easy more than ever, stealing silverware and paintings and anything they can set their fingers on. When the rich are living well, they know how to throw a party in their fancy homes and invite all kinds of funny characters that are nothing but funny and have absolutely nothing in common except their grotesqueness. But beware the musicians or artists you may invite because you may invite trouble more than music. And the four siblings are adding their touch of delirium tremens to that alco-hole which is no waterhole though there is no alcohol in this prohibition blind alley that is as dark as the wine cellar in which you keep the roof of the house for the chimneys not to get wet when it rains. And they play on the dumbness of one, I mean muteness though I do not reject dumbness ... Read More

VHS : Marx Brothers in a Nutshell
The Marx Brothers In A Nutshell is a solid documentary about the greatest comedy team in history although it is not without one or two flaws. The film shows us the best of The Marx Brothers on the silver screen; and we get great interviews with family members but not with the brothers themselves. The quality of the footage is excellent and the sound is very good as well.

The documentary covers quite a bit of ground in just 98 minutes. We get still photos of the young brothers when they were doing the vaudeville circuit and Broadway plays. The bulk of the motion picture archival footage comes from their films which they made at Paramount Studios and MGM Studios. We get good insight from directors who worked with them and the children of the Marx Brothers about what made each brother tick and how they created characters that were, in essence, ... Read More

VHS : At the Circus
At The Circus isn't rated as one of the better Marx Brothers comedies; but I myself liked it very much. OK, so many there's not enough joking around between Groucho Marx and Margaret DuMont; but there are numerous great moments in the script and the plot moves along at a very good pace. The acting is very convincing and although the musical numbers could have been cut down a little they do add something when Chico plays the piano, for example.

The action begins when Jeff Wilson (Kenny Baker) forgets about his wealthy aunt's inheritance to run his own circus. Jeff also has plans to marry his sweetheart Julie Randall (Florence Rice). However, what Jeff doesn't know is that his partner John Carter (James Burke) is crooked and wants to own the circus all on his own. Carter wants to be sure that Jeff Wilson won't be able to repay the $10,000 loan ... Read More
