This movie has so many different aspects in it that I wanted to
study it. I have seen it on tv, but there is so many deep messages
in it that I wanted to study it. It is consumed with American culture-
especially from the black perspective. Several times I have discussed
things in the movie with my black friends.

VHS : The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh
Growing up in the 1970's, times were great. Big Wheels and Green Machines. Bomb Pops to Italian Ice. Mr. Softee and those amazing soft serve ice cream cones with sprinkles. Metal roller skates and banana seat bicycles. But nothing speaks more of the 70's than the movie, "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh". In a time when things were more simple, The Fish, told a tale of a basketball team who needed a miracle, a found in the cards or should I say Psychic. Needless to say the moral of the story is about beliefs. It's OK to have beliefs in other things as along as you believe in yourself first. Now that I live in Atlanta, finding this great comedic tale was certainly an excellent find. "The Fish" reminds me of those summer days and simpler times, yet again saving me from what's going in the world ... Read More

VHS : Which Way Is Up
The late great Richard Pryor delivers a usual awesome performance in the 1977 comedy about a troubled man regarding sex and politics. Not only that,he plays multiple roles,as substantiated by the cover photo. I remember seeing this movie when I had Wometco Home Theatre in the late 70's. Years later,I caught this movie on Comedy Central, with the profanities muted,of course. I dedicate this film, with his others,to the memory of Peoria,Illinois-born Pryor(December 1,1940-December 10,2005).

I was thrilled to acquire this wonderful film about a great black musician. I have played his music on the piano for years, so when I first saw this movie on TV many years ago, I was ecstatic. When I finally purchased the VCR, I took it to my workplace (in this case, a men's prison) and had it shown to the inmates during "Black History week" over the prison's video system. I was proud to show a quality movie to an inmate population that was beter than 50% black. They really enjoyed and appreciated seeing the story of the King of Ragtime and many had never heard of him, so this movie certainly enriched their knowledge of this famous historical personality.

VHS : The Jacksons - An American Dream
The Jacksons: An American Dream along with The Five Heartbeats and The Tempations is one of my favorite male R&B group musical movies. The casting was excllent but the film does have some flaws. The film could have went into more detail about the fellas and it would have been great to hear Find Me A Girl,Daddy's Home and Rock With You.

6.White Man's Burden (1995) starring: John Travolta, Harry Belafonte, Kelly Lynch, Margaret Avery, Tom Bower

VHS : White Man's Burden (1995)
In a racial role reversal parody, White Man's Burden does a fair job of illustrating the overt, socioeconomic disparity racism creates. It fails, however, to explore the roots of self-hatred, which extends beyond any socio-economic considerations. Taking a hypothetic which could have been included in the production: Imagine John Travolta's character walking into a church with his family. After having taken their seats, they notice all of the imagery including angels and saints adorning the stain-glassed windows, are pure African black. Similarly, a wooly-haired dark Jesus is shown on the cross at the church's alter. Later while looking through a Christian publication, only similar uni-racial imagery appears. While at home watching an excerpt of "The Ten Commandments", the family notices the cast is entirely ... Read More

VHS : Mardi Gras for the Devil
I was skeptical of this movie at first. I was used to seeing Robert Davi as Bailey Malone from Profiler and was most familiar with his portrayal of villians, but I was impressed. The movie pits Robert Davi as a homicide detective up against the Devil. Most people didn't like the ending, but I think it was very ironic and, from a theological perspective, quite accurate.

VHS : For Us, The Living - The Story of Medgar Evers
For Us the Living, a movie that recently sneaked onto video after airing on national T.V. The story of Medgar Evers, a civil rights leader from the early to mid sixties who was murdered by the Klu Klux Klan. This movie tells us first hand how Medgar, took on racist politicians and came home to be a loving husband. Played beautifully by Holling Rollins, and the gifted Irene Cara. It is on my shelf right there by Malcolm X.

The follow up to DIRTY HARRY is also a response to the critics who charged Eastwood and Don Siegel with being fascist. In MAGNUM FORCE the bad guys are a team of rogue cops who dispensing vigilante justice on the criminals of Sodom by the Bay (aka San Francisco). Harry's foil this time is Hal Hoolbrook as Lt Briggs and a team of rookie cops that include David Soul, Tim Matheson, Kip Niven and Robert Urich. John Mitchum (brother of Robert) returns as Frank degeorgio and look for Albert Popwell (the banker robber in DH, "I got's to know!") as a pimp with a new use for drain cleanerand Mitchell Ryan as a red herring. Not as good as the original, still an entertaining ride. Nice finale at the ship graveyard. Scripted by John Milius and Michael Cimmeno and with a score by Lalo Schiffrin.
