VHS : Used People
Once more, we will have the immense pleasure to watch two legends of the cinema in the peak of its creativeness. The versatile Shirley MacLaine plays the role of a recent Jewish widowed and the well educated Italian gentleman, who also lost his wife.

Nevertheless, this autumnal romance really lacks of a true narrative vertebral column and from time to time yields us to effective vignettes, that work out as a tongue in the cheek. You should remind for instance "Moonstruck" to understand plainly the problem to deal with a heavy-handed script bounded with a magnificent and a superior cast.

Fresh and funny but ultimately disappointing.

VHS : Miller's Crossing
I had seen Fargo, and was prepped to have a good time with Miller's Crossing. I knew it was meant to be a takeoff on film noir, so I didn't expect great art. Just some fun.

Nope. Even with the stellar acting power of Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney, this souffle falls flat. There is no -- as in NO -- plot to follow. All you see are guys dressed up like 30's mobsters, trying to talk tough and clever. But their lines aren't actually tough, and they certainly aren't clever.

Halfway in, I commented to my wife, "It's kind of hard to follow," to which she said, It's impossible. Nothing's happening." We popped the DVD out at that point, and put in another movie. Maybe if I'd stuck it through to the end, some little thing would have actually happened. But that's not the ... Read More

I'm a huge movie buff and find myself partial to dramatic, personal performances. MJB wasn't the blockbuster event when released and I believe, as many of you, this film has been tragically overlooked. Luckily, it seems to have resurfaced and grown some new legs.

The dialogue is mysterious, cryptic and haunting to say the least. Your heart will tear and heal several times. The storyline paces you through the dynamic, father/daughter relationship, our own inevitable mortality, and several, classic displays of integrity.

Anyone who has a strong sense of self and a sincere hope that good things come to deserved people will enjoy where this journey takes you. So many life lessons are front and center through out.

Do yourself a favor if you've not taken this one in ... Read More

VHS : Path to Paradise - The Untold Story of the World Trade Center Bombing
Path to Paradise shouldn't offend anyone who lost a friend or family member on 9/11 or in February of 1993. It wasn't created to play on your fears or insult the memory of those who died. It was created to explore the 1993 truck bombing and just happened to be an excellent forecaster of the 9/11 attacks. In this sense, it was way ahead of its time. Every person who viewed this show after 9/11 most likely scratched their heads and said "why didn't anybody see this coming?" Hollywood has done its best job at blurring the lines between poetic license and reality in this movie. It would be a five star effort even if 9/11 had not happened.

9.Safe Passage starring: Susan Sarandon, Sam Shepard, Nick Stahl, Marcia Gay Harden, Robert Sean Leonard

VHS : Safe Passage
An overprotective mother crosses over the boundary of the emotional barriers when she fears her son's death in a military explosion and must wait for the official notice. On the other hand a desperate man who want to be redeemed, and the eldest son who tries to keep the family together will be the dramatic coordinates of this unusual film, of notorious level and high artistic virtues.

Consider the year: 1994; and two futures Oscar winners: Marcia Gay Harden and Susan Sarandon; besides add the presence of Sam Shepard and Robert Sean Leonard and the fine direction of Robert Allen Ackerman.

The Spitfire Grill is a must see movie. It is a movie about human relationships, and about the difference one person can make. For the religious, it has a great theological message too!
