I would advise any cinefile with a human heart and an appreciation of true art to disregard all reviews (including this one), watch the movie, and judge for himself; lest he miss a unique and uniquely profound experience.

The film is a timeless thing of beauty, strikingly original, grounded in true human-ness, at times moving, at times bitter-sweet, but always real; and it leaves no trace of current cockamamie ideologies about women or other political korrectness: it is about real life, or sober fantasy.

Directed by a woman, most definitely not a "chick flick". The furthest thing from a "romance novel", though many superficial viewers seem unable to tell the (huge) difference. I would also say that it is sex-neutral. It says as much to men as to women. (I am one of ... Read More

Caught this on Drive-In channel (which I love) and it's actually pretty dang good.

- it's got a plot!

- lots of beautiful women. Naked! (not nowaday silicone bimbos)

- empowered women! For instance, there's a great line in the movie, one of the best I've ever heard, where a rape victim gets the upper hand and asks the slimeball, "what's wrong? All the romance gone out of it?" Love it!!!

- lots of funny moments. I love the phil spector type famous music guy who they have to pull of one of the women and he's panting like a dog. Hilarious!

- Did I mention the beautiful women? Incredible natural bodies and one gorgeous woman actually has short hair, which I didn't think would fly in one of these 70's drive-in flicks.

Odd satire on voyeurism (?) that has film student Virginia (Maria Rojo) wrapping up her film studies class with a video project that will require another person. She gets former boyfriend Marcelo (Jose Alonso) to come over for a drink and to talk. She plans on using him as an "experiment" in the project. She tries to seduce him but he discovers the camera, gets angry and leaves but returns later and agrees to help her. They get naked and have sex for the video project. "Homework" takes place on one set and from the angle of Virginia's camera. It's a two-person character study that turns out in the end not to be what it appears at all. The sex is lengthy and explicit and designed to turn you on (it takes place in a hammock) setting up the viewer for the twist at the end. The first part of the film ... Read More

Even though this movie was hardly surreal, it was abundant with Bunuelian trademarks and symbolism. Now, this is not a bad thing, anybody who has seen many Bunuel films will know that this is one of his from the first few scenes, and they will like it.

It is a bit corny though. It tells the story of a rich man whose entire family takes the wealth that he accrued for granted. The family is concerned about his alcoholism and in order to ensure that he remain an efficient provider, they trick him into thinking that he lost all of his money and forced the entire family into destitute poverty. But the best laid plans of mice and men always go awry and this great madcap begins to trick his family into believing that they in fact did lose all of their money. A comedy of errors ensues.

Wow! This is a terrific movie that I was reluctant to see but very plesantly surprised and glad that I did. A remake of a classic from 1949 by the prolific actor/director Emilio Fernandez, this redo does not disappoint, then again, I never saw the original. A good movie anyway, as I really enjoyed the recreation of the time period. The story takes place in Mexico in the early 1940's at a famous ballrooom named, Salon Mexico, hence the name of the movie. The movie opens up with the murder of a couple, who apparently kill each other and who, it turns out, were dance parteners. The movie is all about how this tragedy came to be. The investigator arrives and the story is told through a series of flashbacks via the investigators interogation. What he discovers is an interesting relationship between various interelated ... VHS : Rojo Amanecer
Read More

This 1995 film is a remake of the 1949 "Salon Mexico" directed by Emilio Fernández, which I wish was available on video, as I have not seen it. The direction by José Luis Garcia Agaraz, the glorious cinematography by Carlos Marcovich, the late '30's sets, the use of color...it's all a sumptuous visual treat, so much so that at times one can get caught up in the look of it, and get lost in the film.

The plot starts out with a double murder, and then in flashbacks and from different points of view, the story is told...but as the back of the video box states, no one ever knows what exactly has happened, only how it has affected the lives of those around the murdered couple.

The cast is gorgeous, and superb. Maria Rojo, Blanca Guerra, Demian Bichir, Edith Gonzalez, and Alberto Estrella are all great, ... Read More

Reminiscent of "One Flew Over.." but with a Garcia Marquez twist, this is one of the classics of Mexican cinema. The horror that grips you in this film builds gradually, with the inevitability of Hellenic tragedy. If you were moved by the Nicholson flick, or dig the films of Luis Buñuel, this could be a rewarding experience for you.
