VHS : Francis Joins the Wacs
When i watched this, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was still as funny as I remembered it to be. When I was younger, I was a fan of the Francis films, and watched whenever they came on TV back in the Fifties. When I found this one,it was like discovering an old friend and finding that though times had changed,it didn't lessen my appreciation for the films-or my enjoyment when I saw them again.

VHS : Teacher's Pet
Directed by George Seaton (Miracle on 34th Street), this coyly titled 1958 romantic comedy has more on its mind than mistaken identities and the May-December relationship at its core. Running a bit too long at 120 minutes, it's actually an intriguing look at the shifting journalism ethos of the late 1950's when hardcore, Front Page-style newspapermen were begrudgingly making way for reporters with college degrees. It should come as no surprise that Clark Gable represents the former as Jim Gannon, the no-nonsense editor of the fictitious New York Evening Chronicle, at odds with journalism teacher Erica Kane played with sophisticated élan by Doris Day, who was just embarking on her most fruitful period as an actress with her near-classic pairings with Rock Hudson soon to follow.

VHS : Navy Vs Night Monsters
This movie is an odd mix, with a good story but poor script, good acting by half the cast, bad by the other half, apparently decent production values but bad special effects. It's based on a novel by Murray Leinster, one of the most popular sci-fi writers of the 1950s & '60s, whose work inspired Irwin Allen's The Time Tunnel and The Land of The Giants.

The story follows the same formula as The Thing and It The Terror from Beyond Space - about a group of people terrorized by a monster in an isolated location - in this case an island. The monster was brought on a plane from Antarctica.

The good actors here include Billy Gray (The Day The Earth Stood Still, On Moonlight Bay, Father Knows Best) and Bobby Van (The Affairs of Dobie Gillis, Lost Horizon). They both have some good scenes ... Read More

VHS : Girls Town
It's always amazed me how director Charles F. Haas managed to orchestrate the outstanding cast that he had for _Girls Town_. The amount of talent assembled for this low-budget classic is virtually unprecedented: Mamie Van Doren, Mel Torme, Ray Anthony (Mamie's real life husband during filming), Paul Anka, Gloria Talbott, Elinor Donahue, Gigi Perreau and The Platters.

Mamie Van Doren's portrayal of trash-talking Silver Morgan is a "crazy, cool, fantabulous" camp classic. Van Doren's voluptuous figure is enhanced with push-up bras and padded panty girdles before it is poured into a series of revealing outfits. There's no doubt about it -- this girl puts out! Gloria Talbot and Peggy Moffitt exchange coy glances as Paul Anka sings "When Somebody Loves You", while the _Girls Town_ girls dance with each other ... Read More

This a dreadful example of what Jayne was reduced to play in to feed her children and compensate for the lack of earnings of her deadbeat-husbands/lovers.
The only reason to watch it would be because Mamie Van Doren was also in it.But be aware (and i read that in a biography about Jayne) that in their contracts was specified that they would NOT appear together in ANY scene whatsoever. So you see them SEPARATELY in different scenes. Also be aware that if you blink, you will not see either of the 2 blonde beauties.
Conclusion:Get this film for a member of your family who is nostalgic for the ways of the ''Ol' South',or someone with a white hood showing his eyes only

VHS : High School Confidential
Mary Jane, weed, tea, ganja, herb, stick and so on. Every generation (which should tell us something) has its own code words for its recreational drugs. But wait a minute. Drugs, especially marijuana, are bad for you right? Why? Marijuana is the first step on the slippery slope down the road to serious drug addiction- heroin, opium, crack and so on. And then on to a life of crime and jail. Is this a story from today's headlines? Well, I suppose it could be but it is not. This is the premise behind the 1958 classic teenage B movie High School Confidential.

Now frankly, this year I have been on a Jerry Lee Lewis kick trying to establish who was the "king of rock and roll" during the 1950's so I picked up this little movie to see if it could aid my Jerry Lee bias. While the lead in scene of Jerry Lee on a truck doing High School Confidential ... Read More
