VHS : Best Man (1964)
"It did Adlai Stevenson great harm not having a wife and trying to be funny all at the same time".So declares a delegate at a party convention and it seems equally apt of its author Gore Vidal whose political hopes were shattered by a mixture of his sexuality and a patrician ironicism (twin and insuperable barriers to political advancement in Amaerica then -and maybe still)

Jazz on a Summer's Day captures a day in time that for me is magic. Each musician at the top of his or her game, set for all who lived through that era to enjoy again.
Those too young to have known this time will enjoy seeing some of the Jazz legends of the era.
The Newport Jazz Festival was a legendary meeting of the new and the old.

A wonderful retrospective of Aretha Franklins' music career. I saw it on PBS and had to have it,so I searched the web for many months with no luck.
I am thrilled to have on VHS until it is finally released on DVD. It leaves no stone unturned in telling her story. I grew up listening to her music and knew most of the details of her life, but this is a concise gathering of the facts that is unlike any other biography I have seen. If you like her music,it is a must-have.

A majestic, magnificent artist, who, judging by this film and by the sounds I've heard on vinyl, on cassette, yes even on youtube, "lived the Life I sing about in my songs". I agree somewhat with the earlier reviewer whow as bothered by the song fragments - it's an inscrutable thing to me, as I've watched in exasperation for decades, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Little Richard partial performances on videos, DVDs, etc. The same approach is found on this production, so it is surmised that the producers/directors/editors, were going by "formula". Very recently I bought a James Brown DVD documentary with some of the rarest clips imaginable...overruled by that narrator telling us stuff we already know.
Songs include "Didn't It Rain?", also associated with Sister Rosetta Thorpe and Little Richard, "Eliger Rock", "Joshua ... Read More
