Two emotionally wounded people find love through a dominant/submissive relationship. Maggie Gyllenhahl is great, as usual. Warning: although the domination scenes aren't that heavy, some people could find them offensive. But I'm not into BDSM myself and still liked the movie a lot.

This bloodless production's period costume design, cars, TV newscasts and popular music do nothing to make it seem like anything other than a product of this torpid decade; you can't sell a counterfeit 1988 to a fledgling of that enormous, tacky era. If I want '80s teen angst or surrealism, I'll consult the genuine article and watch some old David Lynch or John Hughes films (separately), all of which have what this film doesn't: character, substance and zeitgeist without all the hokey pretension of this boring, distended exercise.

The novelty of this movie's time-travel plot gimmick can't sustain its numerous uninspired scenarios, complete dearth of appealing and interesting characters, vast array of moronic clichés and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is surely the most irritating actress in ... Read More

Except for a small, slight logical extension to the end, this adaptation is completely faithful to the book. To keep it to a reasonable length, chunks of plot and exposition in the original book have been left out - for example, the entire back story about Mackey being a published author is deleted, so when he goes back to his writing and Martha interrupts him at his typewriter, anyone not familiar with the original book may be lost as to why he's typing and why he reacts so strongly to being interrupted.

The cast assembled is a dream - Debra Winger, Barbara Hershey, Gabriel Byrne, Laurie Metcalf, David Straithairn, Paul Dooley. Because they've had a chance to read the original novel, they have complete backstories, and fully inhabit their characters.

When I first saw this movie, ... Read More

The only reason I can honestly say that this film is not as bad as, say, Saving Private Ryan or Titanic or From Hell is simple- the babes are cute as hell- Maggie Gyllenhaal is always sexy in a sly way, Kirsten Dunst does aptly portray the 1950s type whose bodice needs ripping & bosom needs suckling, & Julia Stiles has an eerie porcelain-like perfection, almost preternaturally perfected, that makes her mesmerizing to watch. &, hey, JR is not the best actress on the planet, but her goofy good looks are not punition. I would like to see stars like her wield & flex their power to improve rancid scripts like this. Hopefully the younger babes, if they become stars, will do just that- & ironically learn real lessons from this film that are not contained within. I can only guess JR actually likes clichéd wannabe ... Read More

This is the story of how to write a screenplay from a book without a story. It is a desperate and obsessive research of emotions, of meanings, of love in the documentary "The Orchid Thief" that corresponds to an intimate research of itself that will culminate in the complete fusion between the story he is writing and his own life.
This movie should be just about flowers and nothing else, Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage) says but it became a movie about its own script. It is original and explore the creativity of an artist.

Everyone knows Charlie Kaufman for "Being John Malkovich." While that movie was great, this movie is right up there with it. The cast is wonderful, and the plot is so intriguing. It makes you almost believe something that is completely unbelievable, and for that, it is nothing short of brilliant. Sam Rockwell needs more starring roles; he is a great actor.

There's a moment in Johns Sayles' latest film, Casa De Los Babys, that is among the most poignant ever filmed. A young maid in an unnamed Latin American country's main baby mill is engaged in a conversation with an Irish woman down to adopt. The Irish woman, Eileen (Susan Lynch, from Sayles' The Secret of Roan Inish), does not speak Spanish and gives a poignant tale about her life and desire for a child, and then the Spanish girl, Asuncion (Vanessa Martinez, from Sayles' `Lone Star'), tells of giving a baby of hers up for adoption four years earlier, and both women touch each other, with the quiver of their voices and the emotion of their eyes. Eileen rhapsodizes about getting a child and her desires to be a good mother, as she always dreamt of, while Asuncion, understands nothing of what is said, but empathically `gets it', because ... Since I was an extra in this movie, I have to say it was fantastic. I didn't give it 5 stars because Mr. Waters has done better...but it's entertaining, nonetheless.
