I was hesitant to go for the two disk set, but it's really worth it if you love musicals, and love MGM movies. The second disk is a great addition, packed with loads of info about Arthur Freed, with commentary by Debbie Reynolds, and it even includes the original film clips of the songs in the movie. This is a great choice for a fan.

2.Frankenstein starring: Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, Boris Karloff, John Boles, Edward Van Sloan

VHS : Frankenstein
Given that I already own The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) (busts and all), I hemmed, hawed, and read other reviews prior to purchasing the 75th Anniversary Edition. However, an Amazon seller listed an offer I couldn't refuse, so I bit and, all things considered, have no cause for regrets.
The Good: First, the print looks and sounds better than the previous releases. Nice and clean with deep blacks, good contrast, and very little damage, the video is solid and a pleasure to watch. However, I'm especially appreciative of the audio remastering--it sounds terrific for the first time (at least in my opinion).
A treasure trove of juicy extras are included, the jewel in the crown being Kevin Brownlow's Universal Horror, which I've caught on TCM. Also to ... Read More

VHS : Yellow Cab Man
Very disappointed in this tape. This tape contains a copy of the movie that was apparently edited for television. I say that becuase I noticed that there were several scenes cut from the movie. The movie on this tape doesn't flow correctly and there are references in the movie to scenes that the viewer never sees.

I wouldn't recommend the purchase of this tape.

VHS : Public Enemy
***** 1931. Directed by William A. Wellman. The screenplay earned an Academy award nomination. During the prohibition, Tom Powers and Matt Doyle become part of the Paddy Ryan gang and enjoy the mobster life. For a while. Cagney, Harlow and Blondell are great in this film any movie lover should own. At least, two scenes of THE PUBLIC ENEMY are already part of history: the grapefruit squeezed over the face of James Cagney's girl-friend and the final apparition of Cagney more spectacular than any movie of THE MUMMY serie. Masterpiece.

5.Flying Tigers starring: John Wayne, John Carroll, Anna Lee, Paul Kelly, Gordon Jones

VHS : Flying Tigers
If I were rating this flick for historical accuracy, I'd give it just one star. (For the real story, turn to the book: Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and His American Volunteers, 1941-1942.) As an hour and a half of entertainment, however, it's probably worth three stars. This was John Wayne's first combat role, in 1942, and filming actually began while the American Volunteer Group was still in combat.

Where the movie really shines, though, is in the depiction of the Japanese fighters battled by Duke and his buddies: they're old-fashioned, fixed-landing-gear Nakajima Ki-27s, in footage clipped from Japanese feature films about the air wars in China and on the Soviet border. Those are indeed the planes that the AVG met in combat. So when you hear the Duke drawl, "Nack-ah-JEEM-ah," you can rest ... Read More

VHS : Thoroughly Modern Millie
I saw this movie last year (2007), because my school did the play (which is fabulous). I was aware of the racism in the story at that time, but only knew it to be mild and shown in a negative light. I was horrified by what I saw in the movie. The adorable, sweet, funny Ching Ho and Bun Foo, are replaced by creepy, perverted, 'Orientals', who come from a Chinatown, that bares a resemblance to the Biblical image of Babylon. The Chinese are portrayed as rat-like vermin, and the actual images of Big Mary's Tart Shop, were horribly disturbing, showing the young women, whom Mrs. Meers (the strange, Chinese-effected owner of the Hotel Priscilla) has kidnapped, writhing in gags and cords, while they are packed into shipping crates, for the trip to the streets of Hong Kong.

Julie Andrews is the absolute opposite of Millie in the musical; ... Read More
