VHS : Looking for Richard
I really enjoyed this film because it makes accessible one of the greatest written English stories to another generation on whom otherwise it would be lost. The Bard's play is a story written after the fact during the victorious Tudor era. Hence the creation of a dark hearted villain and his manipulative lust for power. Richard really was a brave king who died in battle at the head of his troops at Bosworth in 1485, the victorious Henry Tudor's family thus having the opportunity to enjoy Shakespeares re-write of history as they clung to power.
The villain is a true monster and has been the basis of many a similar character that Pacino himself has played in a more modern setting.

I studied the play at school and at first was baffled by the language. I persevered with it, ... Read More

VHS : Escape from Alcatraz
This film based on a true incident involving the last successful escape from Alcatraz was the last colloboration between Clint Eastwood and Don Siegel and the result is a winner!! Tightly directed by Siegel in a semi-documentary style, Eastwood is perfectly cast as the lone mastermind behind the escape but before that occurs we are treated to the oppressive treatment of the convicts as adminstred by cruel, sadistic warden, excellently played by Patrick McGoohan. In fact the scenes between McGoohan and Eastwood are perfectly played and an able supporting cast led by Roberts Blossom, Larry Hankin, and in a minor role, Danny Glover help out also. If you like prison dramas in the mode of "Brute Force" or Siegel's "Riot in Cell Block 11" (another classic of its kind) then you'll like this one.

VHS : Presumed Innocent
The beginning of 90's was full of court dramas and murder thrillers. This is a very good combination of both, which means it will attract the fans of both genres. A very good movie with a surprise ending. One of the best movies of both Harrison Ford and the legendary Alan J. Pakula. Deputy Prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Ford) is assigned to investigate the murder of a woman he had an affair with. All evidences are against him. Framed Sabich is desperate to reveal the real killer...so are the viewers! But believe me the ending will surpass all your expectations and anticipations. Charming Scacchi and the beautifully shot love scenes add so much to the film. Do not hurry to presume...

VHS : Love on the Run
Based upon dramatic incidents that took place in Columbus, Ohio, when a defense attorney fell in love with her imprisoned client and subsequently assisted him in escaping from custody, this film, shot largely in and about Columbus, features Stephanie Zimbalist as lovelorn lawyer Diana Rockland, along with Alec Baldwin as the sociopathic convict who manipulates her sensibilities. Made for television, this production is saddled with many earmarks of such a work and in general is a fairly routine affair with the exception of telling performances from the two leads, unfortunately softened by slovenly production values and flawed continuity, in addition to a shallow script that is itself not helped by immoderate cutting and editing. Initiation of the relationship between the lovers/fugitives is barely made manifest ... Read More

VHS : Claire Dolan
The tag for this movie could easily be - people suck so don't bother trying to form a relationship with anyone. I can appreciate what the director was trying to do, a dark and stark look at human relationships, but this film is chock full of atmosphere and little else. We watch as Claire Dolan says and does whatever a man wants in order to have sex with them. She needs the money to pay off a debt she owes to this older man. We watch as her mother dies in a nursing home and Claire makes sure they do not notify the older man who has been footing the bill. This "friend" of her parents has been forcing her to prostitute herself to pay off a debt incurred by her mother's care? Scenes between these two characters are tense and the screen vibrates with violent emotions.

Claire gets the heck out of ... Read More

VHS : The Turning
A simple plot. The major attraction is seeing Gillian Anderson in her debut
film. On that she was good.

VHS : Final (2001)
Coincidentally, I watched Resolution #9 a few days prior to watching this one. That movie showed a man descending into paranoia-- believing everyone is out to get him and conspiring against him for some type of experiment. This one also has a hero in a similar situation. However, here, there is doubt as to whom to believe.

Denis Leary is great in this role and the movie is interesting, although it's not a perfect film by any means.

He wakes up one morning in a mental hospital believing it is 400 years in the future. He believes he went into the hospital to do a cryogenic experiment on his finger 400 years ago and that he was put into a cryogenic sleep against his will. He believes that he overhears the hospital staff talking about giving him his "final" injection that will kill him.

He tries to enlist ... Read More

This is absolutely the worst movie for Steve Martin and Charles Grodin. I bought it reading other reviews thinking Charles Grodin would be awesome, but to my surprise this is one of the worst movies ever made. You may smile at one point, but beyond that, not worth a penny. Watching a wall is more entertaining.
