VHS : Reap the Wild Wind
Paulette Goddard was the frontrunner to play Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" until Vivien Leigh pipped her at the post. Four years later, Goddard finally got the chance to play another firebrand Southern belle in Cecil B. DeMille's REAP THE WILD WIND, a costume adventure with the emphasis on costume--and filmed in glowing early Technicolor.

Goddard plays Loxi Claiborne, the feisty manager of a ship salvage company in 1840s Key West, Florida. Loxi falls in love with Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne); but later finds herself caught under the spell of his attractive arch-rival, Steve Tolliver (Ray Milland). Playing one man off the other, Loxi gets caught in the middle of a dangerous battle between rival shipping companies, masterminded by scheming King Cutler (Raymond Massey). ... Read More

Actually, I watched this movie because I was so fascinated by Dorothy Dell, who starred as "Bangles Carson," a tough gambler's girlfriend and nightclub singer. It is hard to believe that Dell was only nineteen years old when she made this film; she died two weeks after the film's release in a horrific nighttime car accident. But she looks and acts much, much older...she was beautiful, talented, and had an extremely promising future.

Oh, yes...and Shirley Temple? Well, I think this was the best role she ever did. She was so little (five years old) and so gifted and natural in this role...her later movies were too sugary for my taste! She and Dell and Adoph Menjou had marvelous chemistry together in this film, although Menjou was terrified of Temple's screen presence and knew she was stealing ... Read More

Well, it must be a good movie, since I never forgot what I have seen when I was 11. This movie was one of the first we got to watch in Bavaria, after the war. I am a little older now, but would like to see it again, mayby in the original, why not? Johannes.

5.Caught in the Draft starring: Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Lynne Overman, Eddie Bracken, Clarence Kolb

VHS : Caught in the Draft
Not even Bob Hope, escorted by a raft of fine character actors, can save this poorly written attempt at wartime comedy, as his patented timing has little which which to work. The plot involves a Hollywood film star named Don Bolton (Hope), and his attempt to evade military service at the beginning of World War II, followed by his enlistment by mistake in a confused attempt to court a colonel's daughter (Dorothy Lamour). Bolton's agent, played by Lynne Overman, and his assistant, portrayed by Eddie Bracken, enlist with him and the three are involved in various escapades regarding training exercises, filmed in the Malibu, California, hills. Paramount budgeted handsomely for this effort, employing some of its top specialists, but direction by the usually reliable David Butler was flaccid, and this must be attributed ... Read More

6.Spawn of the North (B&W) starring: George Raft, Henry Fonda, Dorothy Lamour, Akim Tamiroff, John Barrymore

VHS : Spawn of the North (B&W)
SPAWN OF THE NORTH is one of the most underrated films from the late 1930's although at the time it was a big hit and won Academy Awards for it's excellent special effects (so impressive they were lifted in put in later films). The movie stars Henry Fonda, Dorothy Lamour, George Raft, and John Barrymore and is set in Alaska. Dorothy Lamour has one of the best dramatic roles of her career as the cannery girl torn between Raft and Fonda and Barrymore is excellent in one of his best "character" parts as a drunken newspaperman but the emphasis is on action. The fairly recent movie THE PERFECT STORM seems to have been a little inspired by this classic. This movie is a must for those who love big-budget "big" movies with top production values.

7.Big Broadcast of 1938 starring: W.C. Fields, Martha Raye, Dorothy Lamour, Shirley Ross, Lynne Overman
directed by: Mitchell Leisen
October 08, 2002
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Big Broadcast of 1938
It's easy to see why W.C. Fields hated "The Big Broadcast of 1938," since his unique talents were ill-suited for Paramount's musical-comedy revue. The few memorable moments in this 90-minute hodgepodge can be found during the first hour - highlighted by the Great Man's surreal golf routine and Bob Hope's "Thanks for the Memory." If director Mitchell Leisen was hoping to recapture the vaudevillian spirit of 1933's "International House," he completely missed the mark.

8.Broadway Bill (1934) starring: Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Walter Connolly, Helen Vinson, Douglass Dumbrille
directed by: Frank Capra

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Broadway Bill (1934)
This is not a good movie, despite the directorship of Capra and the presence of some solid actors. Warner Baxter is miscast. The story is very weak and predictable. And the technical aspects of the film are poor. (Harry Cohn loved stock shots; they were cheap.) Save your money.

9.Call it Murder starring: Humphrey Bogart, Sidney Fox, O.P. Heggie, Henry Hull, Margaret Wycherly

Looks as if it was written and directed by a couple of kids still at school. I can remember being in amateur theatricals like this when I was about 16 or 17. The director has a few visual ideas; eg, the wooden bars of a staircase banister turn into the iron bars of the condemned cell. Not that there's a lot of point to that one. The upshot of the story is that it's right to pursue the letter of the law, no matter how unpopular it makes you, or how strong your psychological empathy with the accused --- even if she's your own daughter. Quaint, in a way. Yes, Bogart is in it, just about. Was this his first turn as a baddie, after playing matinee idols?

10.Roxie Hart starring: Ginger Rogers, Adolphe Menjou, George Montgomery, Lynne Overman, Nigel Bruce
directed by: William A. Wellman

VHS : Roxie Hart
Its quite rare, but in this case the newer version is actually much better. If you have seen Chicago, you can see where they drew their inspiration, but this is not nearly as good as the newer film. This film is like a watered down, slapstick version. It is supposed to take place in 1927, but the clothing looks suspiciously 1940's. Even though I like Ginger Rodgers, I much prefer Renee Zelweger as Roxie, Rodger's character is almost annoying. Adoplh Menjou makes an interesting Billy Flynn, but can not beat Richard Gere by far.
