VHS : William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice
This is a good version of the play, but since I am a school teacher - let me give you a big heads up - there are a lot of bare-chested women in this that does nothing to further the plot. It's my husband's opinion that they are there so that men will watch the movie. The other problem is that this version is trying so hard to be politically correct that it bends Shakespeare's meaning to suit a twenty-first century audience. I feel this is done in such a way as to cause problems with the basic plot.

VHS : For the Love of Mary
In what turned out to be her final movie appearance, Deanna Durbin plays a young woman juggling three prospective husbands in FOR THE LOVE OF MARY (1948).

Deanna plays Mary Peppertree, a young woman who has just started a new job, working the switchboards at the White House. When she accidentally strikes up a phone conversation with the President no less, Mary soon finds herself caught between three handsome young men (Jeffrey Lynn, Edmond O'Brien and Don Taylor). Deanna gets to sing some lovely sentimental favourites like "On Moonlight Bay" and "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen"; plus a dazzling "Largo al Factotum" from 'The Barber of Seville'.

This was never meant to be Deanna's last Hollywood movie appearance. She was in talks with Universal-International to star in some ... Read More

VHS : American Short Story Collection: The Sky Is Gray
In a world of splashy 2 hour+ action-packed,over-produced Hollywood Blockbusters stands the small collection of 46 minute gems from THE AMERICAN SHORT STORY COLLECTION."The Sky is Gray" is one of a few short stories realized into teleplays for the t.v. in the 1970's.They are all amazing adaptations and star some of the finest stage and screen character actors of the time.

"The Sky is Gray" is Charles Fuller's teleplay adaptation of Ernest J. Gaines short story. The story concerns itself chiefly with one day in the life of a young boy,James, and his mother as they go into town to have James' tooth pulled. Now that may not sound terribly grabbing, but for the student of poignant lessons learned in brief time periods with minimal dialogue, you will rarely find one done so compellingly and with such finesse. The ... VHS : Enemy Gold
Andy Sidaris was a master at writing and directing these types of movies, incorporating the elements of "bullets, bombs and babes." However, "Enemy Gold" was written and directed by his son, Christian Drew Sidaris. Christian isn't as accomplished at making movies as Andy is. His father always favored exotic locales, while Christian filmed most of this movie in the woods. Speaking of woods, most of the actors recite their dialogue in a very wooden manner. To be honest, most of them were hired for their physiques and not their acting skills. Only Rodrigo Obregon as the drug lord Santiago, and Julie Strain as hot hitwoman Jewel Panther, can really act. Most disappointing of all, the obligatory love scenes are kept to a (pardon the pun) bare minimum. Where Andy would linger over the love scenes in great detail, Christian rushes ... Read More
