VHS : Francis Joins the Wacs
When i watched this, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was still as funny as I remembered it to be. When I was younger, I was a fan of the Francis films, and watched whenever they came on TV back in the Fifties. When I found this one,it was like discovering an old friend and finding that though times had changed,it didn't lessen my appreciation for the films-or my enjoyment when I saw them again.

VHS : Blood & Sand (1941)
"Blood and sand" is one of the most famous novels of Blasco IbaƱez, that somehow retakes the myth of Icarus about the story of the son of a famous bullfighter, from his impoverished ages of childhood to his unequalled fame as the best Spanish bull fighter, idolized and loved for many women.

His superb reaches a turning point when he was seduced by an alluring woman - Rita Hayworth-, although she is aware he `s a married man, and how this ethic deviation will lead him to a fatal disgrace, here you have the essential pivot of all tragedy according the Greek pattern, the violation or transgression of the rule will blind the humblest of men.

Tyrone Power as the disgraced bullfighter, Linda Darnell as his suffered wife and Hayworth as the "fatale femme" complete a narration that will ... Read More

--From upstairs in the big old stucco house they could hear the faint purr of a typewriter, working at top speed. Marian Carstairs, alias Clark Cameron, alias Andrew Thorpe, alias J.J. Lane, was finishing another mystery novel. When it was done, she would take a day off to have her hair shampooed and to buy presents for the young Carstairs. She would take them extravagantly out to dinner and to the best show in town. Then the next morning she would begin writing another mystery novel.

That's from Craig Rice's first-rate mystery novel, Home Sweet Homicide. In the first-rate movie made from the book, the young Carstairs are Dinah, played by 14-year-old Peggy Ann Garner; April, played by 11-year-old Connie Marshall; and Archie, played by 10-year-old Dean Stockwell. The three kids are smart, capable and ... Read More

This film rates a 4/5 for the music. I own the DVD and VHS versions, and just want to confirm what some others have posted here:

DVD 'Mono' is 100% mono
DVD 'Stereo' is 100% fake stereo (and it sounds lousy)

VHS is mono in the dialogue and what appears to be the original stereo in the musical numbers plus some of the bridging dialogue

I can't speak for the Laserdisc, but the musical numbers on the VHS version sound MUCH better than either track on the DVD. If you like this movie's music enough to listen to it on its own, you owe it to yourself to find a copy. Quite an amazing blunder (cost decision?) that the original stereo is not on the DVD.

I remember seeing this movie in the 40's when musicals were the top draws. How I wish they still made movies like this. Alice Faye and John Payne were wonderful stars & their singing of "Hello, Frisco, Hello" & "You'll Never Know" brought back wonderful memories. All the other musical acts & songs were great & the actors of that era, Jack Oakie, June Havoc, Lynn Bari & the others made for a most pleasant 99 minutes of movie viewing. I'm so glad it finally has been put on DVD.

In this exceptional film noir from RKO, George Raft stars as Joe Warner, a police detective who becomes totally obsessed with solving the mysterious death of a songwriter, Keith Vincent (Edward Ashley), who used women and then dumped them like cheap trash. He nicknamed each of his girlfriends "Dolores" and has a gallery of pictures of his past loves. The police are convinced that Vincent's death was suicide, but Joe isn't convinced, and he sets out to prove that Keith was murdered. It proves to be much harder than he anticipated because he has to research each "Dolores" (he doesn't know their real names initially) and find out which one had the best motive for ending the womanizer's life.

Eventually the police department gets fed up with Joe's quest for the murderer which they feel doesn't even exist and they ... Read More

VHS : Abbott & Costello Meet the Keystone Cops
Abbott and Costello love the movies, and so does the rest of America. Why not invest the $5000 Harry's aunt left him for safekeeping? It's a surefire bet! Well, not so much. Harry and Willie cart that money over to a swindler named Gorman (Fred Clark) who "sells" them the Edison studio in New Jersey. The two find themselves tramping to California hoping to find a job out there. In the process, they find that Gorman has adopted a false name and has become a director-- and he is assigned to work with the boys. Hilarity ensues, of course, and there is a brilliant finale with some of the original Keystone Cops including Hank Mann and Mack Sennett himself.

A lot of this movie involves crazy stunts and fast driving, so many things are done with bluescreens that are painfully obvious. However, for a classic movie fan, this ... Read More
