VHS : Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller
This little Canadian gem was unearthed by my cousins (who apparently grew up watching it and never shared the treasure with us). It is a bizarre little family film that reeks of 80s, and reeks of Canadianisms (an odor which I had previously never really smelled).

If seeing a 12-year-old Rufus Wainwright isn't enough to make you want to watch this film, please just watch it for the completely unpredictable plot, the hilariously kitschy acting, or just to get a taste of Canada (or at least 1980s Canada stereotypes...).

This film features embarrassingly short shorts, completely unnecessary educational interludes in both China and Australia, a kangaroo putting a letter in a mailbox, and a thesis that suggests every Canadian is obsessed with collecting stamps. And that's merely ... Read More

This movie has some violence in it so you should be cautious about young children seeing it. Otherwise it is a heartwarming story of servival based on Swiss Family Robinson.

VHS : Snowy River - The McGregor Saga - Comeback
This pleasant episode of the Australian TV series "Snowy River" (no relation to the popular film) was the first to feature Hugh Jackman as Duncan Jones, a sailor returning home to Paterson's Ridge after a long absence. He signs on as a hired hand with the McGregors, although his old friend Rob McGregor (played by Guy Pierce) is driving cattle in Queensland.

Also in this episode, Matt McGregor enters a grueling horse race to save his nephew from being taunted by other children, and the McGregor's cook quits, forcing Dennie to take over the household. Hilarity ensues.

An average outing for a mildly entertaining series, notable only for the appearance of Jackman (who is riveting as always).

VHS : Snowy River - The Grand Opening
This episode of the Australian TV series is the second to feature Hugh Jackman as Duncan Jones. Basic plot points:
-Duncan and Montana begin their mutual attraction
-The McGregors hire a cantankerous Irish cook
-Hannah opens a Russian Tea Room(!)
-And cattle rustlers lurk about
A decent episode, and worth a look for Jackman fans. Suitable for the entire family.

VHS : Snowy River - The McGregor Saga - The Grand Duke
I was a fan of the Snowy River TV series, but unfortunately the last season didn't air on American TV. This was, of course, the season where Duncan Jones (Hugh Jackman) came to town to fill the void when Guy Pearce's career (he played son #2, Rob) took off. Hugh appears in five episodes, all available on amazon.com. They are: Comeback (Duncan Jones comes to town), The Grand Opening (Duncan proves himself), Black Sheep (Duncan's deep dark secret is revealed), Prince of Hearts (Duncan merely provides the occasional remark regarding the main storyline which does not involve his character), and The Grand Duke (Duncan must choose between the high country and the sea). Hugh Jackman does not appear in the next episode, New Business, as Guy Pearce returns, but the ramifications of his storyline are discussed ... Read More

I would like to see more episodes on this series. I was disappointed that it was not based on the movie The Man from Snowy River with Kirk Douglas, which I loved. This is a good series, however, and I hope that it will be released on box set DVD here in the USA. So far, box sets are only available in Austrailia, and I'm not sure I have a multi-region DVD player.
