VHS : Sling Blade
I think I mentioned a few reviews back that I bathe at the river `depressing'; and I think it's obvious that I also am a stickler for the emotionally engaging and sentimentally stimulating. That said; `Sling Blade' broke my heart in many places due to the fact that it is both of those things; depressing and sentimental. I would be a liar if I didn't say that there were also facets of this film that didn't work so well for me, but in all honestly they are few indeed.

The film starts of extremely strong with one of the most disturbing yet most engaging line readings I have ever seen, as we meet Karl for the first time while he's listening to Charles Bushman, a fellow mental institution inmate, reciting one of his lurid tales. J.T. Walsh, the actor who plays Bushman, is so convincing ... Read More

This movie was not that good. In the first place, it was excessively voilent. I know this movie takes place during the civil war and it was a voilent time, but I find it particulary unbearable because of several scenes. I also was disgusted by the sexual suggestions and scenes. I couldn't even sit through it, it was so bad.
It might have had a good love story, I mean a man forsaking his soldier days and risking his own life by being a deserter to return to the love of his life, that basis was fine. I'm a Civil War romance lover, I don't mind that. However, all the junk crammed in this film made it immpossible to watch.

Too bad HD-DVD is dead, but if you still own a player, this is a great movie for the price. I think those of us who are soldiers and have been to Iraq can understand this movie a little better than those who haven't. Some of the scences can be too close to home and somewhat overbearing for non-military viewers, but helps to remind us how much of a sacrifice we made in both wars. The picture quality and sound delivers, though this more of an enhanced DVD than a true HD movie.

4.The War starring: Elijah Wood, Kevin Costner, Mare Winningham, Lexi Randall, LaToya Chisholm
directed by: Jon Avnet
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The War
The war is a Kevin Costner movie, which is to say its a tad too long, and is likely to give you food for thought.

The War is a movie my wife and I have watched several times, and always come away moved. "The War" is the Story of a veteran who comes home from Viet Nam damaged with PSD, in a time when help was not available, and the stigma of mental health disorders was considerable. It is the story of a boy who is conflicted between loving and being ashamed of his father. It is a story of poverty as a great equalizer, and of friendship. Finally it is a story about courage and cowardice in many forms.

So here's the deal, this isn't a fun movie, it isn't entertaining, but it is a moving tale that will give you things to think about.

10.Crazy in Alabama starring: Melanie Griffith, David Morse, Lucas Black (II), Cathy Moriarty, Meat Loaf

VHS : Crazy in Alabama
This is a surprisingly entertaining movie. I had never seen or heard of it before. Melanie Griffiths, who plays Lucille, is superb as the aspiring starlet who admits to killing her husband and then runs off to conquer Hollywood with her husband's head in a hat box. Back at home Lucas Black (Slingblade),her nephew, narrates how is life is in Alabama. The movie flips from her life on the run, and the boy's life back home. Meatloaf plays a racist cop to perfection as is the time of civil rights and segregation - a time of change. This movie takes life and makes it larger than life. It is a comedy, but it is also poignant and politically enlightening. When Lucille is eventually brought home to face justice after finding stardom on Bewitched, she meets the judge played by Rod Steiger. This is where reality flies out of the window ... Read More
