VHS : All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
True. The blood and gore of modern war films are absent, but so are the orchestrated scores, the heroes, and with them, the implicit glory of combat. The trench warfare and Maschinengewehr machine guns might be dated (along with the black and white format and by-modern-standards-poor sound), but the nationalist pride and civilian attitudes complicit in warfare are not. A film for every generation.

Of note: this format is the only I've seen, so I cannot vouch for any so-called remastering or improvements over earlier releases, only the film itself. That being said, I would consider $10 a fair bargain for a good DVD of a great film.

VHS : Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde
John Barrymore shows us all what true acting is all about! To see the heartthrob of the 20's with his dashing good looks to suddenly turn into a pretty scary looking creature was very unexpected to me! As some previous reviewers had mentioned, they say his make-up for Mr. Hyde was "laughable". NOT TO ME! You have to see this film yourself to truly understand that, back then, without all the computer-generated gimmicks we have now, this is just TRUE exceptional horror in its day! True, Mr. Barrymore relied mostly on his eyes and the evil grin to "get across his point" as Mr. Hyde, but it works!!! I first had seen this as an afterthought movie that was thrown at the end of a horror movie collection I had purchased some years ago for my VCR player. It was in terrible condition, as I assumed it would be for such ... Read More

I give this film four stars, but it will likely be either a three or five star movie for you depending on what interests you. 1930's "Other Mens' Women" was a love triangle set around the railroad yards. Conversely, "Danger Lights" is almost a documentary on railroads as they existed in 1930 with a love triangle thrown in to sell movie tickets. You've got footage of a tug of war between two steam locomotives, actual documentary footage of the activities in the Miles City railroad yard, and to top it all off is the only footage of a dynamometer car from the steam railroad era. Since the emphasis is on the technology, you'd think this film would have the awkward dialogue of the early talkie era, but you'd be wrong. The actors behave and speak quite naturally. To top it all off, you're rewarded with a very early talking screen appearance ... Read More

I was surprised at the high ratings the other reviewers gave this movie but after reading them I see we don't dissent that much.
It's true the movie has great production values and interesting docu-style scenes, but it's mostly a curio, and for 30's fanatics only.
I consider myself in love with pre-code movies, but that doesn't mean I'll swallow anything, and this one really didn't deliver for me. It's slow, boring, not any fun.
If I'm being a little too hard, maybe it's because the image quality was a big turn off. Roan can claim whatever they want in their covers but this wasn't mastered from nothing near original elements. The master seems a mega-soft vhs tape or something like that. This is only good for no bigger than 28'' square tv-s and the like.
