VHS : Year of the Comet
This movie has gotten some unnecessarily bad press. It's basically a Cinderella story with wine. The performances are excellent and the Louis Jourdan subplot is clever. This is a straightforward romantic comedy with some international adventure elements. The script is by the great William Goldman. I've seen it again and again. It's sweet and endearing and the wine information is accurate. Check it out. You have nothing to lose and you probably have a wine-loving friend or two who will find it fun.

VHS : Literary Masterpieces: The Count of Monte Cristo
I saw this when it was first shown on US television in about 1975 and was amazed by the storyline and the acting. I had seen Chamberlain in his TV series, but this film allowed him a vast range of emotions and exercises which the Tv show did not. I had not read the novel then, of course.

Relatively, this is the video version people should watch. I videotaped it a couple of times (once the result was not so great) and watch it sporadically since. The book I read in 1989 on a commuter train between Sunnyvale and San Carlos - commuter trains are great for reading! The many opinions about the relative merits of the book vis a vis this excellent film are true, BUT, given the time limitations of the film format, details have to be dropped. Oh, yeah, one of the days when I was reading the ... Read More

VHS : The Man in The Iron Mask: Literary Masterpieces
No offence to DiCaprio but Richard Chamberlain's duel role of "The Man in the Iron Mask" was definitely better. It amazes me only foreign versions of this on DVD are available. Why not a Region 1 version? Chamberlain did three wonderful Dumas classics, this "The Count of Monte Cristo", and "The Three Musketeers". The first two are not available on Region 1 DVDs after all these years. Great movie that I highly recommend for the whole family. Let's hope someone like Criterion gets the rights for both Chamberlain's Dumas movies that aren't available and does a proper job of releasing them. If you enjoyed this catch "The Three Musketeers" and "Shogun". - C. Luster

Hmm. O.K. Here goes!
I first saw this film 50 years ago. Had to wait another 25 years to see it again. It was just as hypnotic as I remembered.
Now another 20 years have passed and I finally HAVE a copy!
This has been my favourite film all my life.
I hate the fact that I am becoming more "critical" of it, but that is probably normal when you have thought about a work of art many times?
So, although (almost) everyone who first sees it seems inevitably to side with LISA and condemn STEFAN...I understand so much better now what a (cruelly?) clueless position the poor guy was in....she makes a point of NEVER telling him anything!
As he ages (and goes downhill) he apparently realizes that something of great significance in Life has somehow eluded him....of course Lisa is sure ... Read More

VHS : Julie
1956's "Julie" stars Doris Day, Louis Jourdan, Barry Sullivan, and Frank Lovejoy. Parts of the plot aren't exactly brimming over with realism, but this black-and-white thriller/suspense drama remains one of my favorite Doris Day pictures.

Doris portrays "Julie Benton", a woman who suddenly realizes her husband is a murderer. Jourdan plays the obsessive husband, who (it seems) will go to any lengths to track down and do away with the scared-stiff Mrs. Benton.

Both Day and Jourdan do a nice job in this film, IMO, but Sullivan is a tad bit on the "cardboard" side here (playing a friend of Julie's who tries to get her out of harm's way). Jourdan, though, is quite creepy and believable as "Lyle Benton", whose "bent on" (~wink~) seeing Julie suffer.

Doris is an airline stewardess/hostess/flight ... Read More

VHS : Madame Bovary (1991)
"Madame Bovary" is a lesser-known jewel of Hollywood's Golden Age. It was following in the footsteps of the epic "Gone with the wind" from a decade before, not an easy path to tread. "Madame Bovary" is a slice of life story of rural France,a contrast to the Civil War-era South.

"Madame Bovary" is framed with a fascinating device- Gustave Flabuert (James Mason) being put on trial for his "obscene" and "immoral" novel. Flaubert makes the argument that Bovary's downfall lay in being raised on romance novels;it was her upbringing, beyond her control, that made her the way she was.

Jennifer Jones is luminous as the romantic, unhappy, morbidly sentimental Madame Bovary. She transforms the adulterous, pathetic woman into a sympathetic character. Van Heflin is quietly marvelous as her plain,hard-working doctor husband. Madame Bovary ... Read More
