VHS : Skin Game
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes good performances by several familiar character actors of the era and features Ed Asner as the slave-trading bad guy. Due to "political correctness" I don't know if this movie could get made today, which is a shame. Highly recommended!

Although this is Ashby's first directorial effort, you can already see many of the themes and recurrent fascinations of the man in this early work. The spare framing, the comfortableness with silences that would later emerge so brilliantly and patiently in Being There, and of course the offbeat and quirky performances, bringing to life characters that are wholly formed yet wildly funny and almost never otherwise shown on screen.

I also found the "European" edits (i.e., abrupt and sometimes surreal) to be creative, and of course the performances by many great character actors were superb. In particular Lee Grant stands out, who was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Her drunk scene at the tenement is a hoot. Also look for a very young, very clueless Robert Klein.

VHS : Left Behind - World At War
Bottom line .. I found watching this a second time cured my aches from the first attempt. Just so you know, I grew up in church and have a strong faith which will never die. I really like and support Cameron for his faith journey and getting Lou Gosset Jr. involved was a coup. Besides, I"m a fan of the books so I'm certainly a reasonable source for constructive criticism.

The first time watching the movie it seemed this was more of a sermon and testimony then an action/drama/thriller with an underlying testimony the books were meant to be. I found myself distracted with so much emphasis on testimony since I already have a strong faith.

So, I watched it again after walking away for a little bit. The second time I really liked the movie. I enjoyed seeing the original actors ... Read More

As a standalone B-movie, it's very mediocre, but watchable. Low expectations are richly rewarded here.

If you read Wambaugh's book, you will loathe the movie because it betrays your hopes and expectations so badly. No wonder Wambaugh wanted to have his name removed from the credits. The movie tears all the flesh away from his excellent book and keeps just a few bones.

If you have not read the book, but "kinda" liked the movie, read the book. You are in for a huge treat. If you read the book, but have not seen the movie, that's as far as you need go. Or read the book again.

This was a great film to watch. The acting was excellent all the way through the film. Diana Rigg and Sean Connery in the same film is a can't miss and Colin Friels was their equal, every performance from all the actors was just fantastic. I wish this was on DVD.

VHS : Punisher (1989)
I recently came across this movie at a flea market, and said "Wow, I remember this". I had a copy when it 1st came out on VHS, but I wasn't as impressed back then because I was a kid and I was such a Batman fanatic that anything that didn't have a big budget and Michael Keaton and Tim Burton's name attached I didn't want to be bothered with (not to mention I had never read a Punisher comicbook). But having watched the movie again almost 20 years later (and since gathered a nice Punisher graphic novel collection) I can say this movie has gotten maybe the worse bum wrap ever. If your a Punisher fan of the graphic novels, especially Garth Ennis fans, you will fall in love with this version of the Punisher. Everything that was wrong with the 2004 movie was done right in Dolph Lundgren's version, he even ... Read More

VHS : Guardian, the
THE GUARDIAN is a disturbing film. It shows a middle class apartment surrounded by a high crime neighborhood as populated exclusively by two types: mostly white liberals who are afraid to face what they see as a sea of criminal faces and muggers who exist only to prey on them. Director David Greene clearly borrows a few pages of script and theme from DEATH WISH to present a pretty hopeless and helpless group of tenants who see their apartment as beseiged by street criminals. They complain, they talk, they do little more than to hire a security expert played by Lou Gossett to protect them. Martin Sheen is the leader of the talkative liberals who hire Gossett, who promptly begins to earn both his pay and the enmity of some of the tenants when he tries to instill in them the need to adopt a security sense ... VHS : Sadat
Made less than two years after Sadat's assassination, the movie makes him out to be a saint. Sadat was no saint, he was a man and he had his faults like any other.

The movie compresses many events in Sadat's life. It appears that both prison sentences he served early in his life are portrayed as a single event. Also, his role in the pro-Nazi Free Officers is not discussed at all, nor would you know that Sadat was jailed while Britain and the Allies were fighting for their lives when Sadat started trying to undermine them.

Given the circumspect nature of the film many key events, formation of the United Arab Republic, Egyptian involvement in Yemen, the War of Attrition etc. are not discussed. However, the film does attempt to convey the byzantine nature of military politics which ... Read More

VHS : Officer & A Gentleman
It is great to watch a young and buff Richard Gere evolve from a self-serving bad boy to a caring and involved friend. I absolutely love the scene where Zach helps Segar walk the wall of the obstacle course, including watching the guys go wild with happiness over their triumph.

Debra Winger is a good actress, and you have to hand it to both Gere and Winger that they could pull this movie off when their lack of rapport was legendary. To be fair to Gere, Winger (at least at that time) was known as a habitual problem child on the set of this and other movies. I believe shortly after filming AOAAG she went into rehab.

I enjoy this movie for a lot of reasons, but I would hate for young girls to watch this and think that the young women (Paula and Lynette) could be so easy and still ... Read More
