VHS : Christmas Eve
I first saw this movie while stationed with the military in Belgium when my sister-in-law made a copy and sent it too us. When it came out on video I bought a copy. This has become a Christmas tradition in our family to watch this movie as faithfully as "White Christmas", "It's A Wonderful Life" and other classics. This should be distributed in DVD. This is a wholesome and moving story of a how the Christmas Spirit can renew a family torn apart by past bitterness and bring the love and warmth that only this movie was able to portray. Bring it back in DVD is my plea -- have a very Merry Christmas America and remember our troops.

This is a wonderful movie, and I'm surprised that it hasn't been put on DVD seeing as it has three great stars - Loretta Young, William Holden, and Robert Mitchum. A good story of unfolding love and devotion in pioneer times. PLEASE PUT THIS ON DVD!

An angel comes to visit a bishop for Christmas, to guide him away from material things and toward a higher purpose.

With Cary Grant as the angel, this should be a better movie. But poor direction from Henry Koster and a disappointing performance from Grant leave it lacking. There's so much room for magic in this movie, but instead we get a heavy dose of cheap special effects. Still, David Niven and Loretta Young bring the story back to its true message and that always leaves my eyes a little watery. Monty Woolley turns in a respectable performance, too.

None of that explains why I find this movie so compelling. Maybe it's just that I'm a sap for the season. Maybe it's the small but lovely contributions of Elsa Lanchester and Sara Haden as the bishop's housekeeper and secretary. ... Read More

I love to watch both The Sheik and The Son of the Sheik one after the other. It's amazing what five years (the time between the making of the original and the sequel) did for Rudolph Valentino's acting. In my opinion, he was one of the finest actors of the time. While he starts out a little over the top in The Sheik he quickly improves. Perhaps part of the melodrama was due to the director, who's to say? Either way both movies are thoroughly enjoyable and surprisingly action packed. They're well acted with only mild melodrama. And of course Rudolph Valentino's presence doesn't hurt anything.
When it comes to Valentino himself I prefer The Eagle to the Sheik movies but they still rank second on my list. He was actually quite good at humor and I'm glad that The Son of the Sheik capitalized on that. He obviously had fun playing ... Read More

VHS : Key to the City
"Key to the City," with Clark Gable and Loretta Young is a wonderful and delightful film. It is the story of two Mayor's one played by Clark, Mayor Finch from California and Mayor Standdish from Maine, played wonderfully by Loretta. The two fall in love in th epolitical world, and find out even though they are total opposites in tastes and personalities, they were made for each other. A great romantic, and entertaining film. I highly recomend it. It has a great story-line. It is very entertaining.
