The 1st 2 No Retreat No Surrender were the best of "they are so bad they are good action movies". The 3rd in the series becomes "they are so bad they are, well, bad". Straight out, the final fight is a 4 minute excite. The rest of the movie is painful. NRNS3 stars Loren Avedon and Keith Vitali, playing 2 brothers who can never seem to get along. Apparently their father, who works for the CIA, killed the son of a man named Franco. Franco gets his revenge and kills their father. The 2 brothers travel to Florida, seperately, where they eventually hook up to get back at Franco. This movie is just about opposite everything from the first NRNS except for one thing - great 80's cheesy action. The story and characters are so different from the 1st NRNS movie that its a wonder why this is a sequal, because it really isn't. However, the same cheesy feel applies to this movie as observed in the first. This time though, the story revolves around the main character, played by Loren Avedon, traveling from Thailand into Cambodia to retrieve his girlfriend who has been taken by Vietnameese and Russia soldiers, who are led by the movie's villain, played by Matthias Hues. If you enjoy Matthis Hues, who plays the villain and usually a good one in most martial arts films (Kickboxer 2, Talons of The Eagle, Blackbelt, Death Match) you will love him in NRNS2. This is one of those "so bad they are good" movies. Not quite as good as the classic "No Retreat No Surrender" (although the style of the movie is very similar), its still good enough to be enjoyed. Loren Avedon I must say is very unique in all his martial arts films. I can never decide if I really enjoy his presence or despise it. His acting is rather lousy, but to the point its almost fun. He tries to be funny, and it sometimes ends up being so just for trying. As for fighitng, he actually is very athletic in his earlier films, and this is no exception. What started out as a decent movie, ended up in dissapointment and just an ok flick. Cynthia Rothrock is indeed only in the beginning of the movie, and the rest focuses on Jalal Mehri, who sorry to say, can not impress me very much. Loren Avedon (No Retreat, No Surrender 2 & 3, King of the Kickboxers) plays the bad guy in the movie. His acting actually seemed to improve over his cheesy acting in his other films, but I spoke up too soon by about mid-way through the film. The 3 ancient evil masters he calls upon are nothing spectacualr in the film, in fact they never speak. Their skills are alright and they consume most of the fight scenes in the movie. Now first of all I was realy stuck between a 2 and a 3 but the movie just gets too freaking stupid. So Jalal Merhi directs this movie. The same guy you may remember as the little Iranian guy who started acting in B-action movies in the early 90's. So Oliver Gruner stars as a gym teacher for track stars at a college, I think so at least, they don't exactly dwell on that. So he has a student(his brother) and it just so happens that these guys who are sitting in a car looking for fighters are scoping him out and notice Oliver. Just so happens that they all recognize him and whadda ya know, he was an undefeated fighter in a kumite type thing they call "The Circuit".
