VHS : It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
I haven't seen this movie on TV in many years. How sad that such a heartwarming movie has been discarded by the networks. There are plenty of other Christmas movies I could sure do without that they choose to show instead.
I checked again this year to see if it available on DVD and it's not or I would have bought it. We don't own a VCR any longer and I think the price for the VHS are a little much.

This is such a great movie. I am really surprised that it is not on DVD yet. As far as I can tell, Fox Movie Channel is the only network that plays it and that is not offered with our cable package. I would buy a couple of copies if it were on DVD.

VHS : Last Hunt
The Last Hunt is one of those Westerns that somehow has gotten lost.It is a story of a time, when loosing sight of the roof-tops,was dangerous. The isolation,of the plains, bleeds men of moral behavior.Robert Taylor is Charley. In town he is bearable. On the prairie, where the town and laws and rules of the town are lost,Charley looses the decency and reason that makes folks civilized.
The Last Hunt is a great western. The systematic killing of the buffalo, which looks easy and real, looks that way because the buffalo killed during the making of this movie, were actually killed to thin down native herds in South Dakota. The killing of the buffalo provides a surreal cinematic backdrop,to a story of good guys and bad guys trying to disguise what is natural within them. This film should be on DVD for the ... VHS : Abandon Ship
From the opening scenes, director Richard Sale makes you aware that this is not going to be a "pretty" film. With the small shot of a simple sea mine floating in the water transforming into a classic 1950s explosion with horrific screams of passengers, Sale again reminds you that this is not going to be a typical Hollywood disaster film. As a reviewer, I must remind those reading that this is not a pretty picture - do not expect your typical film where the heroine always makes good decisions and those that are made do not impact the lives of others. "Seven Waves Away" was a flawless film. It is one of those rare, extremely rare gems that has gone out of print, probably forgotten by most, but when found will provide the most gut-wrenching 97 minutes of cinematic viewing. The plot is simple - a luxury liner ... Read More

While I've read the book and think it is much better than the film, I still love this film a lot for the great acting, music, and filmography. The DVD reproduction is much clearer than the VHS version.

I was a little disappointed in the commentary with Russ Tamblyn and Terry Moore. Both rambled on about personal items not relevant to the movie and a lot of silent gaps. While part of the commentary was enjoyable, I think maybe since so many years have passed they might have forgotten more than they remembered.

I always like the extras with the DVD versions, but this one was lacking in extras. Overall it is worth having this movie on DVD because it is a classic. The picture and audio quality is superb and worth the price. It's too bad Lana Turner died before the production of this DVD. Her commentary ... Read More

A Russian spy satellite comes down at the North Pole and it's a race between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to see who gets there first. Rock Hudson as the U.S. sub commander, Patrick MacGoohan as a mysterious British agent, Ernest Borgnine as a Russian defector and Jim Brown as a hard nosed Marine officer. Not quite up to the novel from which it was adapted but still, an entertaining window on a past era: the Cold War. Also starring Tony Bill as a young Marine Lt. and Alf Kjellin as a Russian officer.

If you don't like disaster movies then steer clear of this made for T.V. offering, as there is nothing here you would like, but if you love these films then you will find something here worth the price. Like i said nothing new just all the stock people trapped in all the same ways as other movies like this , but keeps you involved and has action to spare.

Thanks to the censors, Mae West's final film for Paramount is a tame little farce that trades heavily on the star's (fairly lame) impersonation of a brunette Frenchwoman. Dressed by Schiaparelli, she looks great, but it's a dull affair.

VHS : Johnny Apollo
It's a little farfetched that Robert Cain Junior, when forced by dire circumstance to find an alias for himself, can't think of anything but "Johnny Apollo." Talk about vain! I suppose in today's hiphop world he'd call himself "Li'l Apollo."

But there's nothing little about Tyrone Power, who makes his entrance into the movie wearing nothing but a tiny pair of swim trunks, the old fashioned drawstring kind that look like costumer designers molded wet, gray, supple canvas directly onto his amazing buttocks. He's part of a crew team celebrating a big college victory over Yale, so all the boys are roughhousing playfully with their hero, like pups in a blanket. No wonder the paparazzi want to snap his photo; however what he doesn't know is that his dad, Robert Cain Senior, has been playing close to the mark for years and he's now ... Read More
