VHS : It's a Wonderful Life
Frank Capra's meditation on the connections each man builds to those around him is the pure, distilled essence of holiday spirit. In a world that's forever beating us down with reminders of our isolation and of the lack of meaning in our lives, this is a bright and shiny rebuttal.

I don't know that anyone but Jimmy Stewart could play the nice guy who always does the right thing and inject that character with the darkness necessary to turn a schmaltzy premise into a profound statement of each man's place in his world. A great supporting cast (including Thomas Mitchell, Gloria Grahame, Ward Bond, Henry Travers and Beulah Bondi) led by a brilliant director. Nicely remastered print. And while the extra features were just lifted from 80s TV broadcasts, they do have interesting information ... Read More

VHS : A Guy Named Joe
A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, and Lionel Barrymore, A GUY NAMED JOE is the story of Pete (Tracy), a hot shot bomber pilot, who dies when he purposefully crashes his disabled plane into a German aircraft carrier. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through flight ... Read More

VHS : You Can't Take It With You (1938)
This 1938 film was a big hit in the years of the Great Depression. It is terribly dated and unfunny today, given a changed culture. It begins on Wall Street when Mr. Kirby arrives at the building that has his name on it. Kirby & Co. will have the biggest monopoly on war munitions after he has bought all the property surrounding a competitor's factory. An early mechanical calculator is shown. The Vanderhoff family do their own thing at their large home. [This must be attractive to the unemployed of that day.] We meet each of them and their personality. [Only in Hollywood?] The culture of that time provides the background. "Hello, Mother." Could the son of a millionaire marry his secretary? Does this drama seem dated?

The neighbors are afraid of being forced out as someone is buying up all the land. ... Read More

We very much enjoyed this movie. Gregory Peck is a strong actor in this movie, as he was in his other movies. It follows the family business via the one adult child in the family actively involved. Highly recommend.

VHS : Key Largo
The fourth & final pairing of Bogey & Bacall is a real treat. Also, it's another pairing for Bogey & Eddie G. but this time Bogey got the top billing. This Bogey & Bacall pairing doesn't smolder on screen like the earlier efforts though one would have to be blind not to see anything.

The story mostly takes place at the Largo Hotel on Key Largo. The proprietor is James Temple (Lionel Barrymore) who's been confined to a wheelchair for reasons not specified. He's assisted by his daughter-in-law, Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall). The hotel has been taken over by some gangsters though we don't know who they are until later in the film. Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) arrives on the scene via a bus. McCloud is a world war two veteran who's down on his luck. He's there at the request of Temple who wanted to know ... Read More

I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE IN JR.HIGH IN THE LATE 50'S AND EARLY 60'S. WHEN I CAME BACK AS A TEACHER IN THE 70'S, IT WAS STILL BEING SHOWN. IT REALLY HELD THE ATTENTION OF STUDENTS WITH ITS FRANK CAPRA FORMAT AND ITS HOST, DR. FRANK BAXTER. MANY SCHOOLS STILL USE THIS MOVIE, 43 YEARS LATER.IT HAS GOOD ANIMATION, A GOOD SOUNDTRACK AND MR. SUN IS MARVIN MILLER (THE VOICE OF ROBBY THE ROBOT). IT COVERS THE BASIC ASPECTS OF THE SUN IN A INTERESTING AND ANTIMATED WAY.
