VHS : Great Waltz, The (1938)
I throughly enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to any one who enjoys good music. The plot was entertaining and you were hoping that his wife would win out in the end. A good way to spend a couple of hours.

VHS : House of Dracula
Erle C. Kenton directed this superior follow-up to "House of Frankenstein" and closed the lid on Universal's monster franchise. "House of Dracula" (1945) remains among the studio's better sequels, with effective gothic atmosphere and taut pacing. Onslow Stevens' sympathetic performance as the dedicated yet doomed Dr. Edelman holds the film together - memorably assisted by John Carradine's Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolf Man and (all too briefly) Glenn Strange's Frankenstein Monster. Due to budgetary shortcuts, the disappointing climax is mostly comprised of stock footage from 1942's "The Ghost of Frankenstein."

VHS : Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman
Before there was Freddy Vs Jason there was Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man. I suppose it was only fitting this would happen sooner or later seeing as Universal was behind the Monster movies so why not take advantage of it? This was the first of the crossover movies and quite possibly the best although this movie is far from perfect and does have its fair share of flaws.

Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are two of the greatest horror flicks ever made due to the brilliant performance by Boris Karloff and the direction by James Whale, but after Whale left the series Son of Frankenstein just didn't fully work, while I think the movie was overall good and Karloff was solid he wasn't used the way he was in the past two and he was wise to leave the series afterwards and that's where ... I remember watching this film when i was 9 or 10 back in the late 50's or early 60's after mt father went to work and my mom was asleep. There have been three or four spin offs to this great film that don't even come close.I don't no for sure but it seems that they left something out of this makeover. It doesn't matter this is a five star movie, that i rated four because i was stupid and hit the four star and it won't let me change me it.

VHS : To Be Or Not to Be
I came to this film late, mostly as a curiosity having watched the Mel Brooks remake many times.

Boy am I glad I finally caught this. This film provides a rare window on the early days of the war, as seen by a Western Europe equally perplexed and disgusted by the rise of Nazism. In the hands of a brilliant director, and a motivated cast, this film transcends its moment and enters the realm of high art.

I could go on about the sets, the intricate comic plot that grows increasingly absurd, the luminous Carol Lombard and her amazing gowns, the always funny Jack Benny hamming it and serving as the butt of many jokes, the great character actors populating the cast as real and fake Nazis, or even an early fine performance by Robert Stack, but I'll simply urge you to see this film and see ... VHS : Cairo
This month on TCM the star of the month has been Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald, and good old Robert Osborne has been playing films by this duo every Monday night. And not just the old chestnuts either but the unusual ones that the two stars made when they were apart from each other. I suppose Mayer figured, why put two of them in the same movie, it would be more cost efficient to spread out the love. Thus last night we saw, first, the bizarre, ethereal BALALAIKA which teams Nelson Eddy with the Czech sensation Ilona Massey; and then the action switched to CAIRO, rather a different cut of cloth.

The credits tell the story better than I can. The credits play across a backdrop of Egyptian postcard pictures, the desert sands, filmy desert tents pitched at oases, the Sphinx in the moonlight, and yet ... Read More

VHS : Balalaika
I grew up in Nelson Eddy's time - saw him in person in Chattanooga in 1941-41. It was a real tragedy when I read he had collapsed on stage and died not that long after that. And Ilona Massey - when she flashes those eyes - Wowee!! Reminds me of Miliza Korjus in "THe Great Waltz" (with Fernand Gravet (as he used to spell his name)). And this movie is fantastic!! All the actors are great. All the scenes are wonderful. And the pathos in the Paris Balalaika scene, and when they are brought back together again at the very end! I could see the movie a hundred times. Hurray for DVD's!

VHS : Man Made Monster
'Man Made Monster' is one of those little talked about gems from the Universal archives. Lon Chaney Jr. does what he does best and plays another very unfortunate soul who gets the short end of the stick. This is a good solid reworking of the Frankenstein idea with and few changes here and there. Chaney Jr. will never be remembered for being the brilliant actor his father was as in this film, his acting skills are good, but there as subtle as a heart attack as he goes from "happy go lucky all around good guy" to a walking zombie. In his defense, this film is very short(59 minutes)and there isn't much time to get fancy! No matter.....as it's always been a favorite of mine and I'm glad it's available now on DVD on 'Universal Horror' a 5 films set of old Universal classics. Look for it as a Best Buy exclusive for a limited time ... Read More

VHS : Captain America 15 Episodes
This serial has nothing to do with the original comic book Captain America but is still entertaining. Some people considered the star, Dick Purcell, to be pudgy but this is simply not so. He just had a more realistic body type than a male growth hormone guzzling freak like Sylvester Stallone. The men of Dick Purcell's era had survived the Great Depression and when they were hungry they ate meat and potatoes. Go take a look at your own gut sometime!

Overall, Purcell made a pretty good serial hero, tough enough to do the job convincingly, a reasonably good actor, not wearing his angst and self doubt on his shirt sleeve like some modern sissy boy hero. While not as great as Buster Crabbe or Tom Tyler, he was better than Kirk Alyn (sorry, Kirk).

This serial has lots of excellent fight scenes and ... Read More

My parents told me about this classic. I enjoyed it a great deal; however, I would like to know if it comes in DVD format. Usually when I order movies I don't check if it is in VHS or DVD and have always received DVD -- so I never thought to check it. Please advise, because I'd like to order one for my parents. Thank you.
