The Verdict (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
One of many of the late, GREAT Paul Newman's fine work on film. I first saw this film in the theater and simply had to purchase the DVD after the sad news of his passing. I think it is one of the must-haves of his work as an actor.

VHS : Halloween Tree
This is one of my favorite cartoons to show to middle schoolers. We study Medieval Europe and this is the perfect way to talk about how all these different cultures contribute to Halloween as we now practice it. Ray Bradbury is my favorite author, so we read some of the book and the movie is narrated by him so you can use this to teach similes and metaphors. Great learning tool! But I wish it was on DVD!

3.The Indian In The Cupboard starring: Hal Scardino, Litefoot, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, Rishi Bhat

This is a movie about the true abduction experience of Whitley Strieber and his family at his upstate New York cabin. This is a really good dramatization of his experiences. Anyone interested in the subject of UFOs should have a copy in his collection. Highly Recommended!

VHS : Slap Shot
Slap Shot is bottom-of-the-barrel minor league hockey. It's blue collar, living on the edge of desperation, rust belt culture. It's about a marginal business run for purposes irrelevant to sport. It's people miscast in life from hacks who see themselves as pros, to elitists who deign to play with the low-lifes. It's about people screwing up their relationships, about mis-communication and non-communication. It's about how people hurt each other in order to connect with one another. It's crude and irreverent. It's about the really screwy things people finally rally around. It combines more comedy genres than I can count.

Slap Shot is not a typical heartwarming sports flick. It concludes nothing about good and evil. Or overcoming long odds. It's not about a noble coach or noble ... Read More

I can understand why someone named "Ramrod" wouldn't like this film. It could be seen as indulging the worst of the late 20th century therapeutic movement. Very woman-centered, very emotional. Yet that's what's great about it.

It captures a time beautifully, a time when the blush of second wave feminism had worn off and it was a given that women were out there, having careers, showing their competence in the wider world. Yet we still had emotional lives to tend to, we still had to negotiate relationships with men in a world that had changed, we still needed to come to terms with the parts of ourselves that didn't fit the template our culture had set out for us.

This film was lovely in its evocation of a quiet retreat from all that to a space in which these women could be restored ... Read More

VHS : Prefontaine
A longtime runner, myself, who'd forgotten about this rising star in the runner's world, can testify to "Prefontaine" being the best athlete bio-pic of recent memory that surprises, informs and inspires in the best sense of the word. You'll lace up the running shoes after this film. The script was generous to all the supporting people who nurture greatness in the form of Steve Prefontaine. Special mention should go to the casting and artistic control of this looking back upon the start of the jogging era. Jared Leto plays Prefontaine like a glove, at first running on brashness to finish on unselfish awareness. Certainly, there are parallels to James Dean here, but when actual Munich footage enters effectively, Leto's portrayal ascends with the laurels Prefontaine earned. Next to "Jim Thorpe--All Merican" in inspiration, ... Read More

This was an awesome movie. I couldnt believe that our justice system would allow this to happen in the 50's. I guess it was 1953 to be exact. If it were in this day in time I dont think they would have gotten away with executing two people merely on a conspiracy of naming them by one man without evidence. I think this is truly a movie for all to see. Its not only a great movie, it was very educational.
