VHS : The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set)
As for the person who complained that Martin Scorcese called the '80's the "me" decade, that was a popular theme of the time. Maybe you should go back and look at 80's and the literature about it from all kind of sources. Just like the 20's was often refered to as the "Roaring" 20's. 80's was often called the "me" decade. I also think it is not a liberal or conservative designation. Following the internalization of values and desires in the 70's, the 80's was when technology, growth, income and development all led to the application of the 70's trend of an individual ethic. People DID become more selfish and self centered, more complacent, in need of more instant gratification.

I remember seeing this movie when it originally came out in the cinemas - and I came out with a smile on my face. Its one of those silly but really enjoyable teen movies that were so popular in the 1980s (eg Ferris Buller's Day off or Real Genius) that aren't made any more.

This is still I think the best Bond parody movie I've seen - given how much else that has come out on DVD over the years I'm still amazed that this isn't available anywhere in the DVD format. If you run across an old tape (and still have a VHS player) its worth popping this in it for a watch. Don't take this serious and you'll enjoy yourself and if you've sat through a lot of genuine James Bond movies over the years then you'll probably really appreciate the riffs in this movie better - and wonder how you'd ... I think it goes without saying that you shouldn't expect historical accuracy out of Disney. This is a company built on talking mice and mermaids, so I didn't wasn't looking for a history lesson. That aside, this movie wasn't as horrible as most of the direct-to-video sequels. The songs weren't memorable, but they didn't grate on my nerves. And, while I'm no expert, I felt that the animation wasn't bad either. It wasn't on par with the first movie. But it wouldn't have been out of place on a Saturday morning cartoon.

My 3-year-old seemed to have mixed feelings about this one. She loved that Pocahontas danced in a ballgown, just like the other Disney princesses. But there were long stretches of the movie with no action that seemed to bore her.

Pocahontas herself seemed a little ... Read More

Stop living in the 70's. This movie has the Muppet babies in it. That gave birth to the long running cartoon. I guess you guys were too old by then. The first movie was a novelty, the second was not as good as Manhattan. You hippies must have been pretty high watching those first two movies to think that Muppets take manhattan is inferior to those. This movie is big on relationships and you guys just can't relate.

Excellent movie. It's a tie with the first one and better than the second one. Nuff said.

Crime drama, romance, comedy, CUTE kids (the comedic and cute kids elements often blended together in a *kids say the darndest things* format) - all of these parts make up a satisfying and sweet-natured film! Loved it.

This is a fantastic true story about a boy, his mother and his family who are caught up in a communist revolution. If anyone is in doubt about what a choke hold communism can put on a country, see this movie. After you see the movie you might even come to the conclusion that US Senator Joe McCarthy(American patriot, anti spy - anti communist Senator who was railroaded by congressional liberals and the press to the point that his name was made into an adjective in American dictionaries. They made an outcast of him and forced him to live the rest of his short life in disgrace. In 1995, upon the declassification of the CIA's "Verona project", this great man was proven right about everything he claimed including the people that he accused of being communist spies.) wasn't such a bad guy. This movie shows what the reality ... Read More

VHS : Paul Monette: The Brink of Summer's End
I first read Paul Monette when I purchased his "Becoming a Man". I all but fell in love with him! In some ways, I could identify with his life, and he wrote about it so eloquently. I have since purchased many of his other novels and memoirs. When I saw that there was a documentary about him, I immediately bought it.
It was wonderful to hear his voice and see him in action. He was a gorgeous young man, and even in his later years, as AIDS slowly destroyed him, he retained that beauty. I found this documentary to be insightful, and I envy the people who knew him and worked with him. I wish I could let him know what his writing means to me.
Anyone who has enjoyed Mr. Monette's writing will enjoy this documentary. His spirit lives on through his writing and this movie.

VHS : Younger & Younger
"Younger and Younger" is a bizarre and irksome movie.
Jonathan Younger appears to be a successful businessman, but actually depends on his unappreciated wife, Penny, to do all the work. Jonathan manages to get around, and one day when Penny hears him having an affair, she dies on the office floor (sounds highly improbable to me). Jonathan is apathetic at first, but starts seeing the ghost of his wife everywhere he looks.
Meanwhile, Jonathan's son, Winston, comes home from Europe to help keep up the company. Winston is swamped by his new duties, and receives no help whatsoever from his daydreaming father.
Somewhere along the way, Winston gains a foreign girlfriend and Jonathan and Penny are finally united forever.
The plot is utterly ridiculous, and the director does not bother to explain several peculiar ... Read More
