I really enjoyed the film, though having not read the book feel unqualified to make comments about the screenplay. But as a professional musician I feel that I must comment on the music by Raksin which is the finest example of original romantic film scoring I have ever heard, helped by some sublime string playing. The violin and cello solos are heartbreakingly beautiful. Surely it's worth seeing the film for the music alone.

One of the best swashbuckling films ever made, I bought the b&w dvd when it first came out, then when I saw Fox had released a colorized edition, I decided to give it a chance. I was not disappointed. The colorization is excellent and it is like viewing an entirely new film. I've never really understood the complaints the critics have with colorizing some of these older films. If colorizing meant one could never watch the b&w version again then I'd certainly agree, but all colorizing does is allows you to see some of your favorite movies in a different perspective. And as the new 'Special Edition' includes both versions, what's the problem? Now if they would only release the colorized versions of the great Errol Flynn swashbucklers, and Ronald Colman's 'Prisoner of Zenda', my library ... Read More

"Blood and sand" is one of the most famous novels of Blasco IbaƱez, that somehow retakes the myth of Icarus about the story of the son of a famous bullfighter, from his impoverished ages of childhood to his unequalled fame as the best Spanish bull fighter, idolized and loved for many women.

His superb reaches a turning point when he was seduced by an alluring woman - Rita Hayworth-, although she is aware he `s a married man, and how this ethic deviation will lead him to a fatal disgrace, here you have the essential pivot of all tragedy according the Greek pattern, the violation or transgression of the rule will blind the humblest of men.

Tyrone Power as the disgraced bullfighter, Linda Darnell as his suffered wife and Hayworth as the "fatale femme" complete a narration ... Read More

I bought this DVD because I remember seeing the movie on TV when I was a kid back in the '60s. I wanted to see if it was what I remembered. And yes, it was...a great piece of propaganda for the Mormon (LDS) church.

I was a member of that cult in the 1970s. So I know what I'm talking about.

I have an Australian friend whose mother-in-law points to the seagulls "saving" the crops as a miracle, since Utah is nowhere near the coast. Well, I live in Idaho. We're nowhere near the coast, either. But seagulls are here scavanging newly turned fields every year. It's no miracle. These birds adapted to an inland environment after the "Salt Lake Sea" receded.

Buy this if you want. But remember that it is just propaganda.

Most movie guides -general and specialist-give this movie a bad rep.It is frequently dismissed as "Stagecoach" lite-a variation on stage passengers under attack from marauding Indians .Yes there are similarities and yes this is inferior to John Ford's groundbreaking 1939 masterpiece, but it does not merit the opprobrium heaped upon it by critics .

It is a movie of two halves .It opens when John Banner (Dale Robertson)is shot and left for dead by his two partners in a bank robbery. He is not in fact dead and makes his way on foot to a nearby town wherre he settles accounts with the backshooting pair .A motley group is assembled in town awaiting the arrival of the Laramie stage .The noisiest is a US Senator (Ward Bond)a moralising sententious bore who maunders on at great length about the need to adopt a more ... A cinema technique in advance of its time. Head and shoulders above its more recent remake. Harrison never got his just due for his outstanding comedic efforts. Rue de Valle and other period character actors make this absolutely worthwhile to own for any Preston Sturges fan.
