VHS : Love Actually
I regret that I missed "Love Actually" at the theater. I'm so glad that I bought the DVD, because it has become one of my favorite movies, and certainly one that I see at least once during the holidays every year. I never tire of it. The music and characters are full, real, and wonderful. It's not all laughs, but it's life affirming.

As charming as it is, "Love Actually" is strictly an ADULT movie, not family fare. It wouldn't be the unique movie it is without the adult scenes and language, but be forewarned.

Soundtrack includes music by many artists. Check out the soundtrack album here on Amazon.Com.

VHS : If Tomorrow Comes
This movie to my surprise is very very good. I rarly can watch a mini-series without dozing off, but this one had me glued to my tv for about 4 hours, or more. This is a great movie, if your lucky enough to find this movie, even if its on VHS, GET IT.

VHS : The Mission
I watched The Mission in a class that I'm currently taking about the Literature of Human Rights in Latin America. The Mission is about the colonial time in South America and shows the treatment of indigenous people and human rights. If we really focus on this movie as a human rights oriented, we could see how the Indians were being treated by the Europeans. They would capture, slave them, exploit them, and the Indians have no saying in the matter; for the Europeans they were like animals, they have no voice, they were nothing. So they could do as they wished with them.
On the other hand there were the Jesuits who saw them as humans who needed guidance, understanding, someone who needed to be converted into Christianity, trying to save them.
I see this movie as a way to create awareness ... Read More

VHS : Shining Through
My husband and I first viewed Shining Through on television. After it was finished, I realized I had been holding my hand in a fixed position too long and also breathing shallow breaths. We decided to go to our favorite store, Amazon, and see if we could purchase it because it was not a recent movie. As always, we were successful. We have started a DVD library so we can view good selections. Excellant acting, surpise ending which was uplifting. Wonderful mystery with lots of conflict. Melanie Griffith was great. Made Michael Dourglas a favorite of mine. We highly recommend this viewing.

VHS : Schindler's List (2pc)
This movie needs to be seen by everyone, and the special features are just as good and informative as the movie. The movie is probably the highly of Spielberg's career. It is about Oscar Schindler who was a Nazi and who saved many Jews during the Holocaust. This movie is shown in black and white, which really draws the audience into the movie and the feel of the 1940s. The only color is a red coat on a little girl, which Spielberg does intentionally so pay attention to that. This is emotionally charged and I usually cry a great deal during this movie. It is an absolute must see by everyone. It is long but is worth it. If you only get one movie this year it should be this one! Amazing from start to finish.

VHS : Les Miserables (1998)
I never cease to be touched by this film; it's one of the few movies I can call "powerful" without being overdramatic.

The story centers on Jean Valjean, a convict -- how his life was transformed by the action of a selfless clergyman, and how his own life transforms those around him. It is very much a story about hope, the rarity and value of selflessness and true love and how it transforms the soul more readily than punishment, and the salvation of the human condition.

The first act always makes me cry. It's one of the most powerful moments in a movie for me -- more of a spectacle than all the battle scenes ever filmed. When those police drag Jean back to the bishop and toss him down at his feet, and that precious man hands Jean the silver candlesticks, I always expect for that shocked feeling ... Read More

VHS : Husbands & Wives
Husbands and Wives was released in 1992, and it is the last movie Woody Allen made with Mia Farrow--their unlucky thirteenth. It was released just in time to benefit from intense interest in the courtroom stand off between Woody and Mia over Woody's relationship with Mia's adopted daughter, Soon-Yi. Not to say that this was a calculated career move, but the film did better at the box office than any of his other films. It offered uncanny parallels into the real life drama, but it also differed in many respects. Still, it was weird how life imitated art, or vice versa.

As the opening credits roll, we hear a vintage recording of Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love?" The first scene shows Creative Writing Professor Gabe Roth (Woody Allen) watching a documentary on Einstein where the great thinker is quoted ... Read More
