VHS : The Andy Hardy Collection - Life Begins for Andy Hardy
Judy Garland (in her third and final appearance on the Andy Hardy movie) plays Betsy Booth, and though she lost none of her charm, she did lose the childish look she had in "Love Finds Andy Hardy" and replaced it with the more glamorous "Presenting Lily Mars" look.
I think one of the reasons that I don't like "Life Begins For Andy Hardy" as much, would have to be the fact that Judy Garland isn't in very much of the movie. It's all about the problems that a small town boy like Andy (Mickey Rooney) has in the big city. He has just graduated from Carvel High School and has dreams of high living, but becomes disappointed when he can't find a job in New York City.

VHS : Andy Hardy's Double Life
Andy Hardy's Double Life brings a shift to the Andy Hardy series. Andy (Mickey Rooney) has decided to go to college and is trying to tie up loose ends before he is off. He has decided to break it off with Polly (Ann Rutherford) though trying to be aloof ends with the two becoming engaged. Not only that, but Polly's friend (Esther Williams) uses Andy for her psychology studies and winds herself as Andy's fiancee too. Also, Andy tries to sell his old car to pay for the transportation of his new car to his town. Judge Hardy (Lewis Stone) has his own problems. He is trying to solve a case involving a little boy (Robert Blake) so he can accompany his son to his old alma mater.

Everything seems all mixed up, but it all comes out right in the end. These films were a wonderful example of what people ... Read More

VHS : Andy Hardy's Private Secretary
It is time for senior graduation and Andy Hardy (Mickey Rooney) is more excited than anyone, and has taken on more work than anyone too. He is the senior class president but he is also overseeing the senior play which he is in charge of writing, directing, and acting in, he is on the yearbook committee, and he is in charge of the male uniform for graduation. It is no wonder he finds the help of a secretary (Kathryn Grayson) so helpful. Kathryn Land and her family are somewhat poor, so they haven't been active with student affairs before, but Andy's enthusiasm is infectious. With the help of Judge Hardy (Lewis Stone), Mr. Land finds a swell job, but Andy just might manage to mess it up.

As always, Rooney's boundless energy is the pivotal part of the show. Without him, this story would be nowhere ... Read More

Pretty good, as far as having almost as much Kenpo techniques in it as "The Perfect Weapon" did & having a positive message at the end. Don't look for oscar-winning dialogue or storylines here either, just lots of action & (thankfully) not too many love scenes.

VHS : Andy Hardy Gets Spring Fever
I would have to say that out of all the Andy Hardy movies I have seen this is the least entertaining. It doesn't have as good of a story line as the other ones. Basically what happens is Andy doesn't care much for his drama class...that is until he falls for the new substitute drama teacher. He improves rapidly in his class and even writes and stars in a play called "Adrift in Tahiti." Everyone notices the obvious difference in his age and the teachers age, well, except Andy. And he becomes heartbroken when he finds out of her engagement to another man.

Like all Andy Hardy movies, this movie does have a few comical situations, but it is not near as good as the other ones.

VHS : Red Headed Woman
Red Headed Woman highlights everything the motion picture Production Code was so much against: unfortunate but everyday occurrences in real life. This movie deals with the topics of marital infidelity; home wrecking and murder attempts. Filmed in glorious black and white, Red Headed Woman remains an excellent example of pre-Code motion pictures.

Red Headed Woman tells the story of Lil, played by a red headed Jean Harlow, who comes from a rather seedy background. Lil wrecks her boss' marriage so she can have him--and his money--for herself. Lil attempts to play the same game again to get even further ahead in society but the second time around her efforts are not so successful. Lil's character can also be funny at times; this quality takes the edge off some of her ruthless behavior that could potentially ... Read More

VHS : Big House
There were prison and gangster films during the silent era. "The Godless Girl" and "Alias Jimmy Valentine" are examples of such films before sound came along. However, sound gave such films an added dimension. "The Big House" is one of the earliest and best examples of the prison film during the sound era. It allows the din of human beings living on top of one another, the prison riot, and the armed escape attempt and stand-off to come to life. Add to this great performances by Chester Morris, Wallace Beery, and Robert Montgomery as inmates with Lewis Stone playing in support as the warden who wants to reform the men but is faced with the constraints of a low budget, and you have a great film. Seeing that stiff performances and static cameras were the norm in sound films just the year before in 1929, the technical accomplishments ... Read More

9.State of the Union starring: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Van Johnson, Angela Lansbury, Adolphe Menjou

VHS : State of the Union
Not my favorite Capra movie OR Tracy and Hepburn movie, but well worth watching because of the wonderful pairing of actors and director! Tracy and Hepburn are a magical pair no matter what movie they are in, and Frank Capra always has a happy ending even for difficult situations. This movie almost seems like a role reversal to Tracy and Hepburn's movie "Woman of the Year". Angela Lansbury did a wonderful job in the movie also.
