VHS : Dark Mirror (B&W)
Two identical twins - Terry and Ruth Collins - are the main suspects when a doctor is murdered in his own consulting office. Several ocular witnesses testify to have seen accompanied by a beauty woman, but at the moment both of them are called to be identified, the chaos between the witnesses is obvious; because apparently they are identical.

With the aim of Dr. Elliot, a connoted psychologist, begins talking with both women, he begins to construct the particular profiles of each one, and that's why will be used to avoid and stop the macabre plan of Terry in order to take the place of her lovable and angelical sister Ruth.

As you may expect the same title "The dark mirror" is an acidic and revealing portrait about the horrid state of things in those troubled years ... Read More

The film is over-long, sometimes boring and a typically over-produced, shiny, uninspired MGM picture. But because of Jeannette MacDonald it is ok. One has to wait long until the eccentric Busby Berkeley finale. It is one of his lesser known works but his genius triumphs even at MGM! It is a must for all Berkeley fans and I highly recommend the film because of this few minutes!

VHS : All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
True. The blood and gore of modern war films are absent, but so are the orchestrated scores, the heroes, and with them, the implicit glory of combat. The trench warfare and Maschinengewehr machine guns might be dated (along with the black and white format and by-modern-standards-poor sound), but the nationalist pride and civilian attitudes complicit in warfare are not. A film for every generation.

Of note: this format is the only I've seen, so I cannot vouch for any so-called remastering or improvements over earlier releases, only the film itself. That being said, I would consider $10 a fair bargain for a good DVD of a great film.

5.Omen 2 starring: William Holden, Lee Grant, Jonathan Scott-Taylor, Robert Foxworth, Nicholas Pryor
directed by: Don Taylor, Mike Hodges
January 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Omen 2
Damien Omen II is a decent sequel to the original Omen film, which was released in 1976. The cast is very strong and includes such well-known actors as William Holden, Lee Grant, and Robert Foxworth. Jonathan Scott-Taylor is excellent as the precocious Damien who gradually realizes his is the Devil's son.

For the most part the plot traces a series of horrific deaths that pave the way for Damien to gain wealth and influence. It becomes obvious that many of the people in his life are evil, and are helping kill-off anyone who threatens Damien's rise to power. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film is how rational, worldly people discover the truth about Damien and become unhinged.

Another strong point of Damien Omen II is the cinematography. Filmed largely outdoors, the movie captures ... Read More

6.Of Mice and Men starring: Robert Blake, Randy Quaid, Lew Ayres, Mitch Ryan, Ted Neeley
directed by: Reza Badiyi

This Robert Blake as George and Randy Quais as Lenny film version is excellent for comparative analysis of novel and film.
Several added scenes provide fodder for commentary on creative license and director's intent. Elimination of any swearing in the film alters George's character to a more sympathetic one and giving Curley's wife an actual name and some added scenes adds a female perspective to the loneliness of laboring males. Sprawling western vistas and primarily outdoor footage give a sense of Steinbeck's California setting.

7.Advise and Consent starring: Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, Henry Fonda, Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton
directed by: Otto Preminger
February 15, 1988
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Advise and Consent
Imagine a film where dialogue was so taut and so well spoken that it became the central conveyor of the plot. That sort of film lives mostly in yesteryear, and it lives magnificently in "Advise and Consent", a riveting examination of the ongoing struggle between the basest instincts and noblest ideals of our elected officials.

The plot line is keyed to the nomination for high public office of a former University of Chicago professor accused of consorting with radicals. (Coming off the 2008 U.S. presidential election, does this sound familiar?) The nomination sets off the usual legislative maneuvering and partisan gamesmanship, convincingly brought to life by great ensemble acting and peppered with wonderful performances by Charles Laughton, Walter Pidgeon, George Grizzard and Burgess Meredith. (The establishing shot ... Read More

This is a must-have for any classic movie buff. It gives inside information on the way the studio was run, some of the greatest actors and actresses of all time and gives some insight into the downfall of the studio era. I hope this is released on DVD at some time in the near future. They certainly don't make stars or movies like that anymore!

Probably my favorite ALL TIME movie. I watch it not just for the story but also for the subtle facial expressions at certain moments...ohhh when Jonas decided he just found his lead actress in Rina, smirking as she was distributing the sandwiches to the out of work crew...his expression...Pappard is the epitome of cool...The whole film is Americana sine qua non just as American Grafitti is...The one liners are pricesless...Miss Baker is beyond perfect...LOVED IT! ALWAYS WILL!
