Coal Miner's Daughter - 25th Anniversary Edition
Great movie for family night. Cissy Spacek did a great job portraying Loretta Lynn and kept me entertained the whole time.
Anyone who loves music should see this movie and would know how truly tough it is to break into the music business; this movie definately shows what it takes to make it famous.
Anyone who was or is poor can associate with the story this movie tells.
This is not a documentary but it does show a lot of history on Loretta Lynn and is enjoyable to watch...definately not boring!

VHS : The Dollmaker
Jane Fonda is unforgettable as a resourceful, unassuming, uniquely gifted, remarkably loyal, and courageous country woman. Her husband, a struggling Appalachian sharecropper, finds a job in the big city of Detroit in the early twentieth century. Believing he has found a better life for his family, he sends for them. They uproot themselves from their familiar rural homeland, and join him in a crowded, dehumanizing, housing development set up for factory workers. Soon the family, and the main character (The Dollmaker) begin to unravel and self-destruct. In the middle of crisis she realizes her worth and integrity. Its a story filled with deep loyalty and family love.

I first saw this film in 2001 and didn't see it again until 2008. I thought my tastes would have changed in between, but I liked it more - a true classic.

The previous reviewer made a mistake, apparently. This is a "great drives" tape, not the great "Highway 61" movie that remains criminally unavailable in any medium as of this writing.

Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin)

This was incredible. I must admit that the one thing I truly regret in my life is the one thing I had no control over... I was born in 1987. I regret it because I missed some of the most incredible times in music history: The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Woodstock '69, Led Zeppelin, ELP, Pink Floyd, etc...

And, of course, this. I was 3 years old, here, and the only music I knew were the lullabies my Dad would sing to me before I went to sleep at night.

I wish I had seen this amazing show live, but I had to settle for the DVD.

Now, I have about five different video sources of Pink Floyd's The Wall Live, as well as tons of audio recordings (including the studio album and Is There Anybody Out There). ... Read More

VHS : Fire Down Below
By the time "Fire Down Below" rolled around, it was all too clear that things had taken a turn for the worse with ol' Steven Seagal: gone were the days when his antics were considered blockbuster material, and the only awards his films had a chance of winning were the dishonorable Raspberries that regularly highlighted him as a bad actor who was simply getting too old to kick butt anymore. Indeed, our favorite wrist-snapping aikido master was in the doldrums - stuck between his best work and his short-lived comeback, and just barely making back the budgets of his then-current offerings.
Still..."Fire Down Below" ain't all bad...

"Fire Down Below", for all non-canon purposes, is a follow-up to "On Deadly Ground": Seagal is Jack Taggart, an EPA agent dispatched to ascertain what's ... Read More

VHS : End of the Line
This delightful piece relates of an unscheduled jaunt aboard a locomotive "borrowed" by veteran trainmen Will Henry (Wilford Brimley) and Leo Pickett (Levon Helm) after their employer, Southland Railroad, shifts its manner of freight transport to the airlanes, resulting in the closure of a railyard in Clifford, Arkansas, with a subsequent loss to many in the small town of their livelihood. Freshman director Jay Russell, invited while attending a similarly fledgling Sundance Institute's workshop to develop his script, does so very effectively, with most of the filming taking place near his hometown of Little Rock, enabling Russell's strongly regional feeling for the South to aid him in composing a very personal, well-executed work. The locomotive is being taken by Will and Leo to Chicago, wherein the pair hope ... Read More

The cinematography is a real pleasure for the eye. Some of the scenes of the old farmhouse, the sky, and Connie (Laura Dern) just sitting on a porch swing doing nothing but musing to herself are exquisitely composed.

There are some awkward scenes in this film version of the famous Joyce Carol Oates story, "Where are you going? Where have you been?", mainly because the original short story was set in the 1950's and the film is set in the 1980's thus the James Dean posters in Connie's room, the fact that Arnold Friend (Treat Williams) is a James Dean look-a-like who drives a muscle car, and that all the high school kids hang out at the local drive-in seem out of place in the 1980's. And yet, even with the anachronisms, as an evocation of a certain time of life it still works.

Granted, ... Read More
