VHS : Turning Point
I am very surprised that this movie had this high ratings. I may agree with others on the right casting, but this was not my genre. I mean, I love watching ballet but I hated to see ballet connected with divorce, alcohol, sexual relationships before marriage, jealous, mean words and actions, and swearing words. It was a very ugly movie with a beautiful ballet. The dance was exquisite but I didn't enjoy it at all because I didn't like the characters at all. When my daughter covered her ears, I had to turn it off. The peace came back as soon as it was shut off. I picked this movie because it was on the government's pick list, but I don't think my Heavenly Father wants me to watch this again.

VHS : Dancers
Dancers is enjoyable to watch. The plot is hokey, at the very least, but it has to tie the dancing in somehow. The dance scenes are beautiful all around and when those sequences cut to the movie's plot it is dissapointing but it makes you look forward to enjoying the next dance scene.

Yes, I admit, you may be tempted to fast forward but it's not nearly as painful as The Turning Point where the dancing scenes were sparse. (Or Center Stage which was a complete waste) In this movie there are plenty of beautiful dance scenes that overall make it worthwhile. Looking forward to DVD. Overall, it is enjoyable if you love Baryshnikov and the ballet Giselle. One of the better dance movies.

"...The screenplay was written by Edward Albee directed by Tony Richardson and star Rudolph Nureyev as Vaslav. Claude Jade as Romola
and Paul Scofield as Diagilev..."

When a Texas university buys a virtually new video--one that will probably play for "years"--and you know that the movie will be viewed
by a rather sophisticated audience--it makes you feel happy indeed.

In the opinion of this reviewer the film production is gorgeous.
It reminds the viewer of what it means to be human.

VHS : Pygmalion
There are no few words that can express how I feel about Pygmalion. Everything about this film is perfect. Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard (Gone With the Wind) co-directed the film; Bernard Shaw wrote both the screenplay and the dialogue; and director David Lean (Doctor Zhivago, Brief Encounter, and Lawrence of Arabia) edited the film--what a pedigree! And what a debut from British actress Wendy Hiller who earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Eliza Doolittle, a scruffy flower girl who's taken off the streets and refined into a beautiful duchess. Every actress and actor has a defining role; Eliza Doolittle is Wendy Hiller's defining role. The following paragraphs are a basic--but descriptive--account of the film's premise.

Pygmalion is set in London England. The film opens ... Read More

VHS : Bad Lord Byron
Panned by the critics but well received by many British filmgoers on its first release in 1949 (the Daily Mirror called it a 'film hit' and fans in Film Illustrated wrote that the acting was superb) this remains a very controversial film, as can be seen from the wide variety of comments on this page! Its bad critical reception in its country of origin probably explains why at the time of writing there is no video or DVD of the film available for UK viewers, but it is available in the US and in Germany (dubbed into German). Yet the film is not all bad. No, it is not the sort of thing film critics like -- it's a costume melodrama aimed at the 'popular market'. When this film was first issued, less than four years after the end of the Second World War, the British were still rationed for food and clothing and conditions of life ... Read More
