I throughly enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to any one who enjoys good music. The plot was entertaining and you were hoping that his wife would win out in the end. A good way to spend a couple of hours.

Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what the Marx Bros. influenced, but its difficult to see what influenced them, other than the rich tradition of music hall.

However, again, when I say that they are totally unique, I'm referring to something else. If one notices carefully at all the groups and individuals that the ... Read More

VHS : I Married an Angel
The films of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald have always held a special
place in my heart, cause they usually point to love and music. Films that
have affected audiences for a long time. They also made people feel better
in the dark days of war.
And today, they still make us feel good. There's a magical chemistry
when they are together. This only lasted 8 films, and Married to a
Angel was their last one. Saw it as a kid, and even today i still love
this film. Dont try to disect the movie, just sit down and enjoy.
And in the end, if it leaves a smile on your face, Nelson and Jeanette
succeeded in their work.

VHS : Story of Vernon and Irene Castle
We will probably never see a dancing duo like Astaire and Rogers again. Fred's ability to make intricate dance steps look as effortless as breathing, and Ginger's addition of beauty and grace as she matched him step for step are a wonder to behold. Thank goodness we have their routines caught forever on film!

And it's with some sadness that this, their final film together, doesn't have nearly the amazing dance numbers we had come to expect from their previous offerings. Don't get me wrong, the dancing is still excellent, but it's just not the Fred-and-Ginger style we know and love. Of course that should probably be expected as they are here playing not two fictional characters, but a real couple, Vernon and Irene Castle, who took the dancing and fashion world by storm just several decades ... VHS : Talk of the Town
A man who escapes from jail just before his sentencing for arson and homicide hides from his pursuers with a beautiful landlady played by Jean Arthur. She has another border, a famous lawyer who fails to see the human side of the law and the consequences for the accused. Discussion about fairness and how guilt is determined make up a considerable amount of the dialogue here but it is hardly worthless. A good movie with a little food for thought.

Joan is a riverboat queen who runs her casino with the aid of political boss Wayne. I saw this movie years ago in California and thought it was corny but cute. Certain scenes are rather ludicrous such as the raven in the window foretelling evil ahead and the malevolent presence of Blanche Yurka as Julia Alderson lingers in the memory for her campy playing. Yurka tries to poison Blondell when she tries marrying into the Alderson clan, but alas the potion is drank by a family member and guess who is charged? There are several musical numbers such as Blondell singing "Up in a Balloon" . A harmless way to while away an hour.

Sequels? Prequels? In the old days, Hollywood just changed a few actors, re-wrote a few lines, changed the setting and added a few new dance numbers and Voila! New Film! This is factory film at its best! Most of the crew from "Song Of The Islands" is here, but Grable has been ditched for Alice Faye (Yahoo!) and Hilo Hattie for Carmen Miranda (Yahoo!)(and I love Hilo Hattie). Instead of two yachtsmen drifting ashore in Hawaii, Faye's cruise ship runs aground off Cuba. She saw the Captain where he shouldn't have been, and won't give in, so John Payne, agent for the shipping company (and soon to wed the boss's daughter) flies her to Havana, and escorts her the best he can. Carmen Miranda shows up and wiggles and jiggles her way in and amongst the english language and big hats; and way too quick, you're at the big musical ... Read More

VHS : Rhythm on the Range
Kind of a snoozy, disjointed comedy in which Bing Crosby plays a 1930s rodeo rider who ropes a society gal, and settles down in the wild West. Crosby's young and cute, but the film's plot is entirely deficient, and almost seems to have been made up on the fly. Look quick for a young Roy Rogers playing in the background during the big hoedown at the end; Martha Raye also debuts here as her typical man-hungry old maid. (Animal acting notes: check out the expression of the white horse Bing rides during a music number at the start -- hilarious! The bull he buys, named Cuddles, is kinda cute too.)
