VHS : The Night of the Grizzly
While the bear special effect definitely needed help it's a pretty fantastic movie for the whole family. Definitely one of those types of movies that you remember from your childhood and want desperately. It was definitely worth purchasing and my kids love it.

VHS : The Long, Long Trailer
This is one of my favorite all time films. Definitely the best movie ever starring Lucille Ball. I am a long time Lucy fan, but that being said even if you didn't enjoy her television shows, this movie is a comedy film that should appeal to about anyone. None of the slapstick humor and dizzy redhead stuff you might imagine there to be. Lucy and Desi tie the knot and buy a long trailer house with all the modern features of the day. They set out as honeymooners Nicky and Tacy, off to introduce Nicky to Tacy's family. A lot of weird stuff happens on their journey to make this a long long honeymoon which just might bring a few second thoughts about ever having gotten married. I highly recommend this one to anyone. All the professionalism you have come to expect from these two hollywood moguls. A very delightful ... Read More

VHS : The War Wagon
The War Wagon was a hit when it was first released and is still a great film today. John Wayne and Kirk Douglas have just enough tension to really wonder if they will end up shooting each other or doing the hold up. Excellent addition to any family home film library.

VHS : Neptune's Daughter
I have observed that one of the lesser known stars of the 1950's was a glamorous swimmer named Esther Williams. Her popularity had waned by the time I started going to the movies but I was reminded from time to time that she and Sonja Heiney (or whatever that ice-skating actress's name was) had a unique appeal for awhile. I noted that her movie, "Neptune's Daughter" won some minor Academy Award (probably for costume design) so I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about. Fortunately, the cast included Red Skelton because I'm not all that certain I would have enjoyed this movie without his humor. There was a scene that had me laughing out loud in a room by myself. It had to do with a Spanish instruction record coming to the end of side one. Overall, I thought the plot was stretched a little bit thin but, since ... Read More

This is my hands down favorite translation of the Cinderella fairytale I have ever seen put on film! I only wish they would put it on DVD. VHS is such and outdated format and it's hard to come by a good VCR that can properly play older tapes. And the cost of owning these hard to find gems is ridiculous. Why wouldn't a company want to turn a dollar on a classic movie? Leslie Caron is a delightful Cinderella and the "Fairy Godmother" is a hoot! The dance sequences are breathtaking and brilliantly executed. The film is a treasure!!

I loved this as a kid. So I figured I'd get it for my kids. And they liked it too, despite the hilariously hokey special effects (hokey to them), so that's why I gave it 3 stars.

But for me, for all the christmas specials, this is the worst.

I couldn't believe the "Sit on my lap" song. Really. Some strange creep comes to town and trades kisses and lap sitting for toys - he should have been arrested for that alone.

And then the way they tied everything to the song was really irritating. Plus, why did the young man have an old man's voice? Annoying.

I always think of this movie in terms of being a gentle sci fi movie. When I first saw it (in 1983) I remember that the acting seemed very natural and though it was obvious that the aliens were portrayed by children, well, that was okay, too. The music is the best, and not just the stuff by Tangerine Dream; there was a great song being played in the bar where Bobby and Iris first meet ("No More Lonely Days" was the title), and the snippets that Robert Carradine played were also fun to listen to. I'll always own a copy.

8.Call to Glory (1984) starring: Craig T. Nelson, Cindy Pickett, Elisabeth Shue, David Hollander, Gabriel Damon

VHS : Call to Glory (1984)
1984's "Call To Glory" was an astonishingly good TV movie that sparked a short-lived TV series and is long overdue for conversion to DVD. It starred Craig T. Nelson as the commander of an Air Force Strategic Reconnaissance Wing flying U-2 spy planes over Cuba at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

"Call To Glory" is only partially about the flying. Nelson's family includes Cindy Pickett as his dutiful and loving wife, who shoulders with her husband the burdens of leadership in a business where husbands often don't make it home in time for dinner and sometimes don't make it home at all. A young Elizabeth Shue is Nelson's teenage daughter, navigating the difficult shoals of early adulthood. A middle son races jalopies at dirt tracks. The youngest son is reduced to silence by his secret terror that his ... Read More

VHS : Hucksters
Every veteran of the advertising industry is sure to find lots to enjoy and ponder in this Clark Gable-Debra Kerr classic. The Hucksters was an adaptation of Frederic Wakeman's devastating novel -- rumored to be a roman a clef -- about big-bucks corporate thuggery and Mad Ave skullduggery in the 1940s.

Returning ad executive Clark Gable and impoverished war-widow socialite Debra Kerr try to hang onto their integrity and each other in the freewheeling, utterly unprincipled world of Madison Avenue in the years after World War 2. They negotiate a minefield of high-stakes ad campaigns, sexually exploitative art directors, abusive CEOs, lickspittle corporate toadies (literally!), and cutthroat ad-agency politics where senior executives are FBI informants who destroy their rivals by ratting them out to the feds.

Shame that such a great film is not available in wide screen yet. Fitting the format for TV/small screen really takes away from the choreography.
