Monster Squad and other comical, horror films are out on DVD. It took 20 years for Monster Squad. How about digitally remaster in DVD for this little Gem. Almost slapstick comedy, but so much fun to watch, but not on schratchy VHS. Please bring this one out of the vaults.

This film is an overlooked masterpiece. Jessica lange, Joan Cusack, and Chris O'Donnell(in his film debut) are excellent, as is the entire film. It's very well acted, written, directed, and musically scored. Another screen gem languishing in the vault unreleased, to the detriment of audiences all over the world who are missing out on such a wonderful film. You'd think Warner Bros. would want to release it and make money, why they haven't is beyond me. They need to this year already, we've waited long enough. I'm so sick of going to Best Buy and seeing such putrid selections of lame films available on dvd knowing this film, as well as "Resurrection" w/ Elloen Burstyn, Sam Shepard, and Richard Farnsworth, are not able to be purchased on dvd. It's hard to believe its been 10 years since this movie came out. Moving right along, what makes this movie interesting is that while there are some fictional elements, they are mixed with historical elements as well. (So to some extent, we are permitted to accept the fictional elements such as the Calvin, Rose, Jack soap opera as real.) It is interesting how we are told the story from a survivor (the 100 year old Rose). Obviously, we know Rose will somehow survive. But that doesn't mean Rose won't lose someone she loves. The scenery and outfits are beautiful, and although the movie is over 3 hours, somehow it never seems to drag. this is absolutely my favourite movie, of all time !! it has made me laugh, cry, and share in the triumphs and losses of the many delightful characters moving through the story. outstanding perfommances all around, wonderful story, marvelous plot. a movie to be treasured, and watched many, many times. if you've ever had a true friend, a must watch.

Where is it? I echo previous reviewers asking why this classic has not been released on DVD. A burnt-out reviewer like Terrence Rafferty (The New Yorker) pans it, but real people who do not live on Manhattan's Upper West Side see virtue in the film. I'm among them and so, happily, is Roger Ebert. Among the many things I like about the film is its portrayal of the wise, patient Catholic priest, who has seen it all yet seems to have retained his faith in a very trying setting and has put his hope where it belongs--in the impenetrable workings of the Holy Spirit. I also respect and admire the passionate relationship (there's no other word for it) between Moon and Wolfie. Both Berenger and Waits are terrific, but I'd argue Waits steals the show. This movie is about the Civil War in Lebanon in the 1980's. During this time US citizens in specific were being targeted, over 50 Western citizens were taken hostage during this time and exposed to appauling conditions, and treated like animals. Back home however while the detainees are struggling for their lives, the victims families are struggling too- for the justice that will see their loved ones returned to safety. This film is a very emotional journey, be prepared few a few teary eyes!

Nevertheless, this autumnal romance really lacks of a true narrative vertebral column and from time to time yields us to effective vignettes, that work out as a tongue in the cheek. You should remind for instance "Moonstruck" to understand plainly the problem to deal with a heavy-handed script bounded with a magnificent and a superior cast. Fresh and funny but ultimately disappointing.
