Rooster Cogburn DVD

John Wayne reprises his role in True Grit as a crusty, over-the hill, U. S. Marshall, this time he is teamed up with Katharine Hepburn who plays the feisty daughter of a minister to the savage Indians. The Minister has been killed by a group of rather incompetent outlaw's and Rooster has promised to "bring them to justice". This movie shows Wayne at his comedic best. Highly recommended for fans of John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn and fans of the comedy Western.

I thought I had seen this film at one time or another, but when I sat down to watch this film with my parents, wife, aunt(who requested to watch it) and uncle, I realized that I had never seen this film until now. Fonda & Hepburn give wonderful performances in this very real sometimes funny and sometimes heartbreaking film.

I found this film very moving, as my parents and aunt and uncle are getting into their 80's with my dad, who will be 82 in Novenber. It's a great tribute to two great actors and to the story of the inevitability of getting old......you have to keep on going, until you can't go any more! Some of the dialogue seems a little corny and forced, but it's really not enough to tarnish such a good movie! The film also deals with different relationships in this family ... Read More

VHS : Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
In this 1967 film directed by Stanley Kramer at one point Spencer Tracy (Matthew Drayton) asks Sidney Poitier (John Prentice, M.D.) what will become of their children if he marries their daughter Katharine Drayton (Joanna). He responds that Joanna believes they will become president but he would settle for secretary of state. Her prophecy has already come true in part since the United States has now had two secretarys of state who are African American and a black man now all but has the Democratic nomination for president sewn up. The film is dated and wouldn't make much sense if set in the present. In 1967, however, a movie about an interracial marriage was certainly one that raised eyebrows.

The rather thin plot is saved by the acting of three Academy Award winners, Tracey, Poitier ... Read More

VHS : Christopher Strong
This film is Katharine Hepburn's second film and her first in a starring role. In her first film, 1932's "A Bill of Divorcement", Billie Burke had starred with Hepburn fourth billed. Here the situation has reversed itself, and Hepburn supplants Burke in more ways than one. Hepburn plays Lady Cynthia Darrington, a member of the British gentry whose family has lost its money. As a result, she pursues aviation for both her love of it and for money to try and restore the family fortune. She has forsaken love up to this point in her life, and as the result of a human scavenger hunt at a party attended by one of her friends, she winds up at the party because she is a virgin, and Christopher Strong (Colin Clive) winds up there because he is a faithful husband to Billie Burke's character. The two meet, fall ... Read More

Hollywood has such a bad reputation among historians, it's easy to dismiss the soap-opera-ish aspect of this film out of hand. It does state at the beginning that it takes certain liberties with chronology.

But it gets the essentials right. Robert and Clara Schumann had a life so full of dramatic incidents, it does seem like the most unlikely Hollywood screenplay. They *did* begin their married life in retreat from her overbearing father. They did have eight children. Later, the young Johannes Brahms, an unknown pianist and composer *did* show up on their doorstep, knocked their socks off with his genius, *was* invited to stay-- and *did* fall in love with Clara.
Robert *did* suffer from mental illness, and *did* die in an institution.

But more than that, I liked ... Read More

VHS : Desk Set
When I was a college student in Stony Brook, New York in 1974, I skipped a class one cold winter morning to stay in my dorm room and watch "Desk Set" on my roommate's black and white portable TV. It was a revelation. Since then I have graduated to watching it on DVD on my large screen color TV, and it continues to be a revelation. I won't repeat all the accolades of previous reviewers - who DOESN'T love the scene on the freezing rooftop or the floating island on a rainy night while Tracy's shoes are cooking in the oven? - but there are lots of delightful lesser moments, such as when Hepburn despairs of getting married and suggests to Blondell that they live together and keep cats (Gertrude Stein, anyone?) or when the continuity person didn't do their job, and Hepburn leaves the office building holding flowers of one ... VHS : Rainmaker (1956)
A great classic movie from the 1950s, this Lancaster and Hepburn film is bound to have you glued to your seat. The sexual tension between Hepburn and Lancaster is remarkable and the all male environment that Hepburn lives in only adds to this. Couple this with Lancaster's sleazy take on being a "rainmaker" and you've got the makings of a great book, play, movie, and musical. Rain-make your way into this great film.

The story does no justice to the great cast of this movie. Every character seems a bit soft in his/her head in this flick.
