VHS : Hamlet (1996)
I am a huge Shakespeare fan, and HAMLET is my favorite of the Bard's work. So, logically, as a Shakespeare buff and an English major, you would expect Branagh's HAMLET to be my favorite cinematic version of the tale. Well, you would be wrong: Franco Zefferelli's HAMLET starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close is my favorite, not Branagh's, and I'll tell you why: Branagh may be an immensely talented director with ground-breaking visions for Shakespeare's work, but he is an over-the-top and dreadfully melodramatic actor whose performances on screen are absolutely terrible. On stage, his moody, sulking, emo and whiny Hamlet would work because stage acting requires a larger-than life performance because as an actor, you have to perform to the back balcony, but on film that sort of acting doesn't work ... There is not much I can say about this movie that hasn't been said beautifully by others. I saw this when I was around 20 years old and it left an indelible impression on me. I am truly grateful for Kate Winslet to have chosen to tell this story. I think that her character is based on the granddaughter of Freud to to be especially familiar for me, as I come from a family of Freudians and yet I too am of similar spirit to Julia. However I only learned that fact after watching it and loving it already. If you enjoyed this movie as I have, I also recommend 'Holy Smoke' which she made with Harvey Keitel before this movie. It is similar but also very different.

Really, what else needs to be said about Titanic? This edition has some great background material that you'll enjoy including an alternate ending that will have you rolling and pounding on the floor! I'm not sure who ultimately gets the the credit for the one that we all know but from this you can see that the editing room doesn't get near enough credit.

5.Jude starring: Christopher Eccleston, Kate Winslet, Liam Cunningham, Rachel Griffiths, June Whitfield

About the only thing this movie has going for it is the excellent music. The producers of this film are out of their mind if they expect any viewer who's not screwed-up in the head to feel sorry for the two stupid main characters just because their sick, incestuous, and adulterous lifestyle is incompatible with the world they live in. If you want to leave your entertainment center in a good mood, don't watch this!

...In a role he'd probably like to pretend never happened! (But he looks darn cute, though!)

For the kids, this is not one of Disney's better flicks. Plot is silly & predictable. Special effects are surprisingly cheap looking (especially for a Disney film). But there is nothing offensive to worry about as a parent, and it's a decent film to run on the DVD player on a raining Saturday when the kids are chanting "I'm bored. I'm bored."

For Daniel Craig fans, it's good for a chuckle to see him in one of his very earliest roles (nothing like his usual edgy work - he must have had the rent due when this role was offered to him!) His shaggy, slightly surfer-style haircut reminds you of Duran Duran. Very cute in silly medieval costume. He was funny at times, with a bit of silliness ... Read More

VHS : Enigma
"Enigma" is an absorbing World War II drama of suspense as long as one takes it as what Graham Greene called "an entertainment" and does not press it too hard for historical accuracy. Because it has several subplots, which become clear only after repeated viewings, the movie leaves the viewer grasping at a few loose ends that are never tied up completely. With an intelligent script by playwright Tom Stoppard, "Enigma" works best when it focuses upon the Bletchley Park team of classicists, mathematicians, and other academics working on cracking the intercepts of German submarine traffic in the North Atlantic. It works less well when it veers off into car, train, and motorboat chases. Nevertheless, clever plot twists, atmospheric English locations, and a talented cast, which includes Kate Winslet, Jeremy Northam, Tom ... Read More

VHS : Iris (2001)
A beautifully written and acted movie about the devastation of Alzheimers. Judi Dench as the older Iris is fantastic and Kate Winslet as the young Iris is very good. This was my first introduction the the actor Jim Broadbent and I found him to be marvelous...so glad to know that he won an Academy Award for this role. Not a movie to pick up your spirits but a treasure just the same.
