VHS : Follow the Sun: The Ben Hogan Story
Being a golfer and a fan of the sport for many years, I was very interested in seeing this, which I did when the VHS first came out. Later, I saw it again because of the same reason plus I usually find Glenn Ford's films entertaining.

Well, the story moves well, it didn't bore me, but I did have problems with the accuracy of it and the general theme of the film, telling us that Hogan really was a nice guy who cared lot about what the public thought. From every account I have read, and from a couple of people who met him or knew him, that was not true. The fact is that he was a mean SOB and remained that way most of his life. This movie looks like it was made by his press agent. It's ridiculous and ruins what otherwise is an inspiring story.

No one can deny Hogan's ... Read More

VHS : Return to Salem's Lot
This is a slap in the face to the original and even to the remake with Rob Lowe, not to mention Stephen King.

They even have a picture on the cover of Barlow who died in the first one. The acting is terrible, the film sucks. That's right it sucks!! I wish they had a negative star, because this deserves -5 stars..

VHS : Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover (Amazon.com Exclusive)
This movie is informative with fiction added. The suspense of the movie is portrayed by the facts presented. It's the closest thing to what is likely the truth about J.Edgar Hoover's life you'll find---especially given the onslaught of one-sided written and movie attacks on one (Hoover) who gave a great deal more than most to the country he loved. While many did their best to destroy Hoover's reputation in the aftermath of his death, here,Broderick Crawford portrays Hoover as a great American but human--with his own skeletons in the closet (no pun intended) and who made his share of mistakes. The movie also touches on the lives of other great Americans--John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. One sees that they, just as Hoover, were human, made mistakes and had their skeletons just as we all do. ... Read More

VHS : Gentleman's Agreement
Do you, as do I, have to fight an urge to run for cover when the term "message movie" crops up? Not to worry, because in this case GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1947) is a fine movie with a great cast, excellent pacing, and just enough wit and verve to highlight its headon treatment of post-World War Two anti-semitism.

Gregory Peck plays Philip Green, writer for a NEWSWEEK-type weekly magazine, who sells himself on the subject of anti-semitism and goes semi-underground as "Philip Greenberg," a Jewish American who is determined to negotiate his life and get to all the good stuff (club memberships, social life, personal acceptance) that the then-WASP aristocracy controlled with varying degrees of denial and arrogance.

Phil finds himself not only making waves trying to do some of the ... Read More

VHS : Hello Frisco Hello
After the first 30-40 minutes of "Hello Frisco, Hello" I was very impressed with the quality of the singing, dancing, and on-stage humor. This was going to be another one of those diamonds in the rough, I thought. It developed into another costumed love story and lost its' magic until it regained it belatedly at the end. Yet the first third or forth of the movie really ought to be seen by those who loved the old Vaudville song and dance acts of the past. Alice Faye is her usual melodious self this is probably one of her best movies. However, for me, Jack Oakie steals the show. His humor was something I expected but I never knew he was so light on his feet. He is quite a dancer and the dancing was the equal of the singing.

I watched "Hello Frisco, Hello" because it won and Oscar (for Best ... Read More
